Impetus<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n Food deserts are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as low-income communities located more than one mile from a reliable source of fresh produce and other healthy whole foods.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n That\u2019s a new term to me.\u00a0 \u201cFood desert.\u201d\u00a0 lol.<\/span><\/p>\n Naturally, we\u2019re inclined to hear the word \u201cdesert\u201d and naturally visualize harsh terrains of flat land, high heat, sand everywhere, and the sun beating down unmercifully.\u00a0 Contextually, it makes sense what a food desert should be, but it\u2019s still amusing to me that my particular area would likely be considered one.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n This isn\u2019t to say that I\u2019m personally of low income living, although I\u2019d hardly consider myself to be of an upper-class echelon of earning, but there\u2019s absolutely no way to deny the fact that the people that live surrounding me are mostly of obvious lower incomes.<\/span><\/p>\n Granted, the interesting thing to me is that the only criteria that separates an area from being a food desert to not being a food desert is the income.\u00a0 So basically, someone who happens to live more than a mile away from the nearest reliable source of fresh produce and other healthy whole foods, but it also happens to be an affluent neighborhood, then it\u2019s not technically a food desert?<\/span><\/p>\n Seems silly.\u00a0 And subjective.<\/span><\/p>\n Then again, it\u2019s pretty much the oldest pastime of Atlanta media, to talk about what they really, really want to talk about, but without using any actual terminology to specifically address it.<\/span><\/p>\n So let\u2019s add \u201cdesert\u201d to the growing list of fake names for my part of the town, with \u201cZombieland,\u201d \u201cthe sticks,\u201d and of course, \u201cGuam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Impetus: Food deserts are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as low-income communities located more than one mile from a reliable source of fresh produce and other healthy whole foods.
