I heard on the radio this morning that Spider-Man was getting killed in the comic books.\u00a0 Admittedly, it was a bit surprising, since Spider-Man is on that echelon of comic book characters that transcends just the fans of comic books, but reaches out to so many forms of alternative media.\u00a0 Spider-Man is more than just a comic book character; he is an icon, a symbol, and a bastion of history.\u00a0 So to hear that he was getting killed, really got my attention.<\/span><\/p>\n But then I had to go and\u00a0ruin everything<\/a>, and\u00a0find out those silly \u201cdetails\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that clarify everything, and in this instance, kind of remove all the suspense and drama out of the equation. \u00a0There is a chance I might slip up my writing and spoil something, so if you genuinely care, don\u2019t continue to read.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n I remember back in like 1992 when Superman was killed off, it was a major deal.\u00a0 News of the death of DC\u2019s iconic superhero burst beyond the hearsay and insider knowledge of comic books geeks, and I recall actual AP articles and stories\u00a0on the front pages <\/em>of\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>, talking about the Death of Superman.<\/span><\/p>\n And then I remember the sensations and experience of actually reading the arc myself, the vivid recollection of where Superman drops Krypton\u2019s greatest axe-handle onto Doomsday as he simultaneously delivers beastliest Kryptonian uppercut, and the ensuing visual of both combatants dying amidst a gigantic pile of rubble.\u00a0 I remember looking at the final panel, of a wailing Lois Lane, holding the corpse of Superman, and the feeling that the entire world around me was silent, until I closed the comic.<\/span><\/p>\n Granted, Superman ended up being resurrected eventually, and business went along as usual, but at the time, this was the first \u201cmajor\u201d comic event really for me, at the state of comic fandom I was in at the time.\u00a0\u00a0 I was never really into Superman, since I was more a fan of Marvel Comics, but I still recognized that the Death of Superman was a monumental event in the history of comics.\u00a0 Ensuing months seemed odd, and although I can\u2019t say it piqued my interest enough to pursue Justice League, or subsequent issues of Superman, I couldn\u2019t help be feel curious to what was happening in the DC Universe afterward.<\/span><\/p>\n Well, I don\u2019t think I can say the same for the death of Spider-Man.\u00a0 And that\u2019s a shame, because I actually like Spider-Man, a whole lot more than Superman.<\/span><\/p>\n The problem is that when I did a little bit of digging for details, I discovered that it\u2019s the death of\u00a0Ultimate\u00a0<\/strong>Spider-Man, from the series\u00a0Ultimate Spider-Man<\/em>.\u00a0 To those who aren\u2019t aware, the Ultimate Marvel universe was essentially a refresher with a few tweaks to just about every existing Marvel property, with the main priority to really get the younger generations into iconic characters.\u00a0 Or as the industry so likes to call them,\u00a0reboots.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n So essentially, the way I see it, the death of Ultimate Spider-Man is akin to the death of a counterfeit.\u00a0 Ultimate Spider-Man isn\u2019t really the real Spider-Man.\u00a0 To me, the real Spider-Man is The Amazing Spider-Man, and not any of the countless spin-offs, alternates, or other inefficiently sub-titled series, like \u201cWeb of-\u201c or \u201cSpider Sense\u201d or \u201cTangled Web,\u201d etc, etc.\u00a0 I think part of the devastation behind the death of Superman was simply the fact that at that time, there really weren\u2019t many, if any at all, sub-series being produced aside from Superman.<\/span><\/p>\n In this regard, it\u2019s not really Spider-Man\u2019s fault, as much as it is Marvel\u2019s, for essentially saturating the market and the storyline with so many alternate universes, arcs, and convoluting canon to where casual readers are utterly confused at what\u2019s canon and supposed to matter, as opposed to what\u2019s not.\u00a0 The comic industry has grown to a point where there are numerous talented writers, artists, and producers, to where they all have these wonderful ideas and stories to tell.\u00a0 And they all are producing these things, and suddenly you go into a comic book store, and there are five monthly series, and two new trade paperbacks of new Spider-Man on the shelves.\u00a0 Good for the business, but continuity armageddon for the characters and properties themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n But back to the point, all the blogs, media outlets, and geeks talking about the death of Spider-Man;
