I\u2019m one of those weirdoes that in spite of whatever I may say, occasionally indulge in the insanity known as Black Friday.\u00a0 Throughout the year, the closer it gets to November and Thanksgiving, I assess things that I either need, want, or both.\u00a0 Over the last few years, in participating in Black Friday deal-seeking, I have come out with a variety of items, such as an Xbox, a Shop-Vac for my garage, and the stereo system in my bedroom, among various other things.<\/span><\/p>\n Whenever I succeed at getting the rare items and the things that I want, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, victory and smugness.\u00a0 In the instances that I have failed to get the things that I want, I am upset, disappointed, and swear to never participate in Black Fridays ever again.\u00a0 But typically, I do.<\/span><\/p>\n This year is kind of different, though.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a very extensive list of things that I think I want or need; sure there are a few things, but nothing extravagant really, and nothing that seems to be an insanity doorbuster by any means.\u00a0 I have my televisions, I have an Xbox, I have my gadgets; among the things that usually cause people to trample each other or shoot each other in parking lots, I\u2019ve already got.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Regardless, I am still interested in going out on Black Friday, even if it doesn\u2019t mean waking up at 3:30 a.m. and driving to wait in a line outside of Sears or Target.\u00a0 But this year, the structure of Black Friday has been mutated into something so convoluted, confusing and ill-explained, that it may as well not even be called \u201cBlack Friday\u201d anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n For what it\u2019s worth, I\u2019m going to be keeping my eyes peeled on a new point-and-shoot camera, and a second monitor.\u00a0 With that in mind, I begin perusing the internets looking for deals on either or both, and I\u2019m finding myself thoroughly turned off to just about everything after the first two minutes.\u00a0 Who\u2019s going to be offering what on which day?\u00a0 Which places are going to start their deals on Thanksgiving Day?\u00a0 6 p.m.?\u00a0 10 p.m.?\u00a0 Midnight?\u00a0 By starting on Thursday, some retailers are completely missing the point of a holiday celebrated by togetherness and unity, by trying to get them to go outside and be miserable for high-risk\/low-reward spoils.<\/span><\/p>\n Is it going to be available online, or is it going to be in-store only?\u00a0 More questions that no readily available answers.\u00a0 Do we dare wait at our computers until midnight, and see if they\u2019re available online, or do we risk punting by going to sleep, and getting up at 4 a.m. where it\u2019s going to be just as difficult to get one in-store?\u00a0 All sorts of questions, options, and possibilities, are leading to a sense of ambivalence, and overall turn-off altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n I sort of understand that some retailers\u2019 rationale is that they don\u2019t want to be the company named on the news where people are getting trampled to death or becoming spontaneous crime scenes.\u00a0 Staggering their opening times, or opening on Thanksgiving Day itself can kind of alleviate the insanity to a degree, but it is coming at the expense of a national holiday where typically people want to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family, and not complete strangers who are thinking of knocking people over to succeed in their own goals.<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019m still hopeful that I\u2019ll get the things I\u2019m looking for this weekend, but at the same time, I can\u2019t help but feel that the tradition of Black Friday has more or less been ruined by a combination of capitalism, sense of prevention, and the compromise of holiday traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I\u2019m one of those weirdoes that in spite of whatever I may say, occasionally indulge in the insanity known as Black Friday.\u00a0 Throughout the year, the closer it gets to November and Thanksgiving, I assess things that I either need, want, or both.\u00a0 Over the last few years, in participating in Black Friday deal-seeking, I … Continue reading Black Friday has been ruined this year<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[116,144,79,71,101,15,25,110],"class_list":["post-34815","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-brog","tag-brack-friday","tag-cameras","tag-cashmoney","tag-famiry","tag-holidays","tag-og","tag-technology","tag-tradition"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34815","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=34815"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34815\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":34817,"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34815\/revisions\/34817"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=34815"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=34815"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=34815"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
