{"id":39477,"date":"2014-07-09T23:54:40","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T03:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=39477"},"modified":"2020-07-12T23:56:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T03:56:32","slug":"why-do-avocados-other-than-hass-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=39477","title":{"rendered":"Why do avocados other than Hass exist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone wp-image-39478 \" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/avocados.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">I like to think that I make a pretty decent guacamole.\u00a0 I\u2019ve received pretty positive feedback from those people who have indulged in the guac that I\u2019ve made in the past, and I\u2019m typically pleased with it myself when I make small batches for the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Over the holiday weekend, I volunteered to bring some tortilla chips and some of my homemade guacamole to a party I went to.\u00a0 Prior to the date, I went to the store to purchase ingredients for the dip, and was disappointed when I got to the produce section, and found out that every single Hass avocado available was not yet ripe.\u00a0 I know there are ways and methods to accelerate the ripening process of Hass avocados, but even those typically take a day, and at the hardness of these particular avocados, probably two.\u00a0 I did not have two days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">So, I ended up picking up some, what I\u2019ve\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodrepublic.com\/2012\/10\/18\/know-your-avocado-varieties-and-when-theyre-season\">learned that the proper designation<\/a>\u00a0were, Hall avocados.\u00a0 The giant, more limey-green colored avocados that are almost twice the size of a Hass.\u00a0 They were soft and ripe, and I figured that they couldn\u2019t be that much different from going with Hass, and in a guacamole with a couple of other ingredients in it, it might hide the imperfections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">How wrong I was.\u00a0 How tragically, horrifically wrong I was, to assume such a na\u00efve thing like a Hall avocado being a suitable substitute for a Hass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Using Hall avocados made my guacamole into shit.\u00a0 A complete and utter disappointment.\u00a0 On a scale of not having enough milk for your cereal to not being able to secure a prime hotel room for Dragon*Con, guacamole made with Hall avocados was somewhere around the disappointment felt when someone spoils an episode of\u00a0<em>The Walking Dead<\/em>\u00a0over Facebook.\u00a0 It just made me sad, and really bummed out that my friends who might have enjoyed in the past, my guacamole, were subjected to this flavorless, runny, miscolored excuse for guacamole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">It got me thinking, why the hell are there variants of avocados aside from Hass?\u00a0 I can\u2019t say I\u2019ve tried any other than Hall, but if they\u2019re as defiantly different from Hass, frankly I don\u2019t see any purpose for their existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Heaven help me, if it can be avoided, I\u2019m never using any avocado other than Hass again.\u00a0 I\u2019m simply convinced that there\u2019s no way any of them can be as remotely good as a Hass, for any culinary pursuit.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I like to think that I make a pretty decent guacamole.\u00a0 I\u2019ve received pretty positive feedback from those people who have indulged in the guac that I\u2019ve made in the past, and I\u2019m typically pleased with it myself when I make small batches for the house.
