{"id":40190,"date":"2015-02-25T22:47:07","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T02:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=40190"},"modified":"2020-07-14T22:47:16","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T02:47:16","slug":"when-phrases-change-meanings-with-the-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=40190","title":{"rendered":"When phrases change meanings with the times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone wp-image-40191 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ewingtotalD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ewingtotalD.jpg 392w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ewingtotalD-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">The last time I was up at my parents\u2019 house, I was rummaging through some old personal effects, and came across an old binder of basketball cards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">It\u2019s funny to admit this nowadays given the fact that they royally suck, and have been more or less the laughing stock of the NBA over the last decade or so, but back in the 90s, I was a\u00a0<em>huge<\/em>\u00a0New York Knicks fan.\u00a0 John Starks, Anthony Mason, Charles Oakley, Derek Harper, and of course, the franchise himself, Patrick Ewing.\u00a0 Loved them all.\u00a0 Rooted for the Knicks against everyone, including Michael Jordan and the Bulls.\u00a0 I felt sports-heartbreak in 1994, when the Knicks came so close, and lost to Hakeem Olajuwon\u2019s Rockets in the Finals.\u00a0 Was even too young to understand the magnitude of the OJ Simpson police chase, and was more irked that a championship game was being preempted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">The point is, I had a ton of Knicks basketball cards in this binder.\u00a0 Primarily Patrick Ewing, because he was clearly the primary star of the team.\u00a0 And while flipping through the sheets and sheets of Ewing cards, I came across this particular Ewing card from a \u201995-96 Fleer set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">And then I snickered, because in today\u2019s snarky trendy vernacular, the letter D is simply not what it used to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Obviously, in a sports conversation, the letter D has always been synonymous with\u00a0<strong>D<\/strong>efense, and in relation to this particular card, Ewing demonstrates his propensity for defense, in grabbing a rebound, a particular skill that he was among the league\u2019s best at, given the fact that he was 7 feet tall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">But instead, I see a card now that says \u201cTOTAL D PATRICK EWING,\u201d and I can\u2019t help but chuckle, because I\u2019m 14 years old, and it\u2019s funnier to think that Fleer would put out a collectible card that did nothing but say that\u00a0<em>Patrick Ewing is a total D<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Oh, how the changing of times can sometimes make some collateral victims of relics from the past.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last time I was up at my parents\u2019 house, I was rummaging through some old personal effects, and came across an old binder of basketball cards.
