{"id":42006,"date":"2015-12-04T23:27:55","date_gmt":"2015-12-05T03:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=42006"},"modified":"2020-07-17T23:28:05","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T03:28:05","slug":"training-for-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=42006","title":{"rendered":"Training for life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone wp-image-42007 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pitttreadmill.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"272\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">I was running at the gym this past weekend, and thinking about how much it sucked to be at the gym.\u00a0 Especially the weekend right after Thanksgiving, where I had just spent the three prior nights eating large amounts of savory and indulgent food.\u00a0 Running on a treadmill and then hitting the weights was about the last thing I really wanted to do, when I could be trying to sleep more, loaf more, or ostensibly be eating more savory and indulgent leftovers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">But it wasn\u2019t a really a question to why I was at the gym, because it\u2019s simply what I do.\u00a0 I exercise regularly, and I have been exercising regularly for quite literally ten years now.\u00a0 Giving that fact some additional thought, I can say that the longest gap I\u2019ve ever had between at least running, has been two weeks, and that was just a few weeks ago when I was on an extended vacation.\u00a0 Save for that instance, I\u2019ve been running regularly for an entire decade, and been hitting weights slightly less regularly within that span.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Honestly?\u00a0 It sucks sometimes, too.\u00a0 There are plenty of times in which I really don\u2019t want to go to the gym, or go running, or do pull-ups, squats or shrugs.\u00a0 But I do them anyways, because I\u2019m OCD like that, and I don\u2019t want to break my chain of regularly working out.\u00a0 And that if I completely stop working out, then I will without question, balloon up to 427 lbs., and be on my way towards ending up on\u00a0<em>My 600 lb. Life<\/em>\u00a0on TLC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">I support anyone who makes the decision to get into exercising, whether it\u2019s weight training, running, bicycling, or any and everything above, as long as the end goal is to improve physical fitness and well-being.\u00a0 However, I\u2019m not necessarily the type to go all rah-rah and exude gushing words of encouragement to just anyone who makes this choice, because frankly I\u2019m skeptical of 90% of people who\u00a0<em>wish<\/em>\u00a0to make a commitment towards exercising, that they\u2019ll talk big, but never actually do anything nor actually stick to it long enough to make any progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">One thing I notice that when a lot of people delve into the world of exercise is that often times, they have a goal.\u00a0 Sometimes, the goal is a weight number that they want to get down to, sometimes it\u2019s lesser things, like wanting to get into a particular pair of jeans.\u00a0 There are broad goals like generally wanting to improve one\u2019s health entirely.\u00a0 And then there are very specific goals, like wanting to train for a registered run, of varying lengths, be it a 5K or a half or full marathon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">However, one thing I\u2019ve noticed throughout the last decade are that the people who stick with exercise long enough to achieve goals, often times wane and eventually stop exercising once their goals are achieved.\u00a0 On a long enough timeline, everyone throws in the towel, or so it seems.\u00a0 At least more people do this than not, that I observe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">They manage to get down to their target weight.\u00a0 Fit into those pants.\u00a0 Achieved their ability to complete a 5K.\u00a0 Successfully trained to be capable of lasting an entire marathon.\u00a0 And then they stop.\u00a0 Taking a break.\u00a0 Relaxing the guidelines.\u00a0 Will get back to it after some rest.\u00a0 A few days becomes a week.\u00a0 A week becomes a month.\u00a0 By a month, a body becomes lazy again, and a lazy body inevitably goes soft.\u00a0 Once soft, getting back into it becomes difficult, and after enough months, it\u2019ll almost be like the previous training never happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">I asked myself \u201cwhat am I training for?\u201d or rather, why I\u2019m so stringent on maintaining such an endless streak of working out.\u00a0 There\u2019s no major run on the horizon for me.\u00a0 Sure, I could stand to lose some weight, but I\u2019m not completely unhappy with the way I look.\u00a0 I\u2019m not training for any sort of power-lifting competition, but I\u2019m still hitting weights regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">Ultimately, every possible answer simply could be simplified by saying that I was just\u00a0<strong>training for life<\/strong>, in general.\u00a0 I see zero drawbacks to always being in a physical state that\u2019s a decided step above every single person that doesn\u2019t work out regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">I\u2019ll always be capable of running a mile on a moment\u2019s notice without worrying about looking incapable.\u00a0 If people want to have a pick-up game of basketball, play catch, or any sort of athletic activity, I\u2019m at a state where I have the confidence that I can participate and not have anxiety of needing to decline because I don\u2019t want my physical incapabilities to be exploited.\u00a0 If my car ever breaks down, or I get lost in a city, I know that I can walk for hours without being incapacitated, if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora; font-size: 12pt;\">There is never \u201cneed to get back on the horse,\u201d because a decade has now passed and I have never gotten off of it.\u00a0 Sure, I can ramp up certain aspects and scale back on others, when it comes to introduce additional goals in which to train for, but when those come off the table, then my default state of living is decidedly still more physically active than just about everyone I know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lora;
