{"id":46768,"date":"2019-12-11T15:55:32","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T19:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=46768"},"modified":"2020-08-12T15:55:43","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T19:55:43","slug":"parasite-should-probably-be-best-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=46768","title":{"rendered":"Parasite should probably be Best Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/66.media.tumblr.com\/c77f28aae701b47f19362ca8d16ecd5b\/tumblr_pw13silLDn1qa3emao1_500.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"231\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I remember when I first saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5xH0HfJHsaY\">trailer for <em>Parasite<\/em><\/a>, my first thought was: <em>what the hell is this actually about<\/em>? \u00a0The trailer gives pretty much nothing away, and the only thing that can really be deduced from it is that there is one family that is dirt poor.\u00a0 There\u2019s little clue to why the film is even called \u201cParasite\u201d for the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Regardless, the cinematography looked intriguing, the brief clips seemed quirky enough to pique curiosity, and naturally I wish to support anything Korean that can ascend to the world\u2019s stage, so I knew that I wanted to see this flick.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t hurt that on the film festival scene, Parasite was cleaning up, even winning the Palme d\u2019Or, which full disclaimer I had no idea what it was, but it\u2019s basically the highest award at Cannes, which <em>is<\/em> a pretty big deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Needless to say, having watched Parasite, I can say that I do feel that the film did live up to all of the hype.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of those films where you enjoy the ride while you\u2019re on it, but then afterward, the mind wanders and analyzes and delves deeper into the story and execution, and the more I think about Parasite, the more I think about how good it really was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And not just because the fact that me being Korean I\u2019m going to give a Korean film an automatic pass on a pedestal; sure it definitely doesn\u2019t hurt it, but when I break Parasite down into my own criteria of storytelling, cinematography, acting and plot analysis, I think the film as a whole really stood out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The story is pretty linear, and not really that complicated; without giving too much up, poor family finds a way to entwine their lives with a rich family, and then some complications arise, leading to the culmination of the plot.\u00a0 The acting is good and Song Kang-ho is to me, one of the most recognizable faces in Korean cinema, to where even a novice to Korean media like me can pick him out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But I think the most ingenious part of the film is the cinematography of it all, which practically tells a story in itself.\u00a0 I\u2019m no one remotely qualified to talk cinematography, but I do know that even through my novice eyes I can be impressed by wide, panning shots that visually explain the story in the difference of class, throughout Korean society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Overall, Parasite is an outstanding film, that I have a hard time finding many flaws in.\u00a0 Sure, there\u2019s a little misdirection here and there in terms of plot that seemed inadvertent, but that\u2019s nitpicking over trying to find reasons to not declare it a perfect flick.\u00a0 Ultimately, as a whole, I\u2019d rate it substantially higher than most films I\u2019ve seen throughout the year, and considering the buzz and the cleaning up it\u2019s doing in all of the end-of-year awards, there\u2019s definite argument that Parasite could be a contender for Best Picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But if the Golden Globes <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 12pt;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/why-parasite-farewell-didnt-land-golden-globe-best-picture-nominations-1260810\">are any indication<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, Parasite, as well as other stalwart films featuring too many non-whites aren\u2019t getting any Best Picture consideration, because supposedly \u201c<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">best drama or comedy\/musical categories must feature at least 50 percent of English dialogue<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Which sounds pretty racist if you ask me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Thankfully, I\u2019m also reading that Parasite would be eligible for Best Picture from the Oscars, so I guess the Golden Globes are the only award that\u2019s kind of racist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Anyway, this isn\u2019t meant to be a post about awards are racist, but about how good Parasite is.\u00a0 Seriously, it\u2019s an outstanding film, and I highly recommend it.\u00a0 I hope it does the motherland proud and wins some serious hardware, but when the day is over, they don\u2019t really matter, and it\u2019s still an excellent movie completely on its own.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remember when I first saw the trailer for Parasite, my first thought was: what the hell is this actually about?
