{"id":47022,"date":"2020-07-19T13:13:18","date_gmt":"2020-07-19T17:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=47022"},"modified":"2020-08-14T13:13:54","modified_gmt":"2020-08-14T17:13:54","slug":"if-only-i-couldve-held-out-for-another-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=47022","title":{"rendered":"If only I could\u2019ve held out for another year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone wp-image-47023 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nissan_ariya.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nissan_ariya.jpg 510w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/nissan_ariya-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I haven\u2019t really paid much attention to cars in a while, especially since I\u2019d just gotten a new one less than a year ago, and that whole having-a-baby thing kind of tends to take mental capacity away from just about everything else in the galaxy for the vast majority of our waking lives.\u00a0 But my Apple News feed randomly spit out <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2020\/07\/heres-nissans-next-electric-crossover-on-sale-in-2021-for-40000\/\">this article about a Nissan electric car<\/a> with an attractive looking thumbnail so I clicked it, and then I\u2019m staring at my screen with a <a href=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/2c\/97\/8a\/2c978a6643f6483c865e00a99a1c0528.jpg\">not bad look<\/a> on my face at the Nissan Ariya, that\u2019s supposedly going to hit the United States in 2021, and there\u2019s a piece of me thinking <em>damn, if I could\u2019ve only held out for one more year<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And it\u2019s not like I couldn\u2019t have; my old Kia Forte was still running fine, and at \u201cjust\u201d 150,000 miles, I probably could\u2019ve easily gone longer, especially with the sheer lack of driving that\u2019s been done during this fucking coronavirus pandemic keeping smart people like me sheltered in place more often than not.\u00a0 I just simply wanted a new car, and I wanted a bigger car, because a baby was on the way, and it would\u2019ve behooved me to be ready with a larger and more comfortable vehicle for my pregnant wife and then-eventual kid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But if I were able to hold out for another year, then most definitely the Nissan Ariya would\u2019ve been in the conversation, when I would be looking for a new car.\u00a0 I used to always be dubious about electric cars, because of their supposed mileage range per charge, but considering my new car now and most Tesla Model 3\u2019s typically range 280-300 miles per charge, and there\u2019s really not a tremendous difference.\u00a0 The real angst lies in the scenario of taking an electric car out on a road trip, and running out of juice with no idea of where to get more, in the middle of the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Really though, I do like electric cars, and I\u2019m optimistic about the future of them, mostly on account of Tesla, and how not all electric cars have to end up looking a turd like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nissan_Leaf#\/media\/File:2017_Nissan_LEAF_(ZE0_MY17)_hatchback_(2018-11-02)_01.jpg\">Nissan Leaf<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BMW_i3#\/media\/File:2018_BMW_i3_facelift_(1).jpg\">weird shit BMW made<\/a>.\u00a0 And I definitely do believe the world has a finite amount of fossil fuel in it, and that I\u2019d rather be on the side of the fence that\u2019s ready for the eventual dry up than not, but at the same time, I don\u2019t want to have to drop like $50,000 cash in order to get a Tesla, not to mention that I really did want a larger vehicle than my compact hatch prior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The Nissan Ariya looks like everything that I\u2019d have wanted in a new car.\u00a0 Much like my new one, it\u2019s in that crossover class, and the specs are fairly comparable to mine in terms of cargo and capacity.\u00a0 The performance was more than adequate to what my slow-grownup dad driving habits have become, and ultimately I\u2019m completely pleased with how it looked.\u00a0 But this sumbitch is also electric, and would therefore no longer ever need a $30+ tank of fuel, and I\u2019d never have to pull into a gas station ever again and worry that someone would try to sneak into my passenger door and steal shit from me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And all at a price point of supposedly $40,000?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Yeah, I\u2019d want in on that action.\u00a0 Que, sera, sera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Whatever though.\u00a0 I\u2019m pleased with what I have now, and perhaps in maybe 7-8 years when I tire of my current car, electric cars will have advanced even further, and prices will have normalized to where they\u2019re not the premium science projects on the road so much as they\u2019re slowly gradually becoming the norm, and the 2028 Nissan Ariya or whatever else is available by then, will be on the table as a potential future ride.\u00a0 But kudos to technological advances, and laying down the groundwork to distancing from fucking gas prices just a little bit more than yesterday.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven\u2019t really paid much attention to cars in a while, especially since I\u2019d just gotten a new one less than a year ago, and that whole having-a-baby thing kind of tends to take mental capacity away from just about everything else in the galaxy for the vast majority of our waking lives.\u00a0 But my &hellip;
