{"id":47384,"date":"2020-10-24T10:28:03","date_gmt":"2020-10-24T14:28:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=47384"},"modified":"2020-10-26T10:28:14","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T14:28:14","slug":"sounds-like-a-clemson-grad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=47384","title":{"rendered":"Sounds like a Clemson grad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone wp-image-47385\" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/climpsonowned.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/climpsonowned.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/climpsonowned-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/climpsonowned-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/climpsonowned-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/chalk\/story\/_\/id\/30176217\/bettor-places-86k-bet-win-860-clemson-tigers-beat-syracuse-orange\">The importance of an education<\/a>: unknown man wagers $8,600 on #1 ranked Clemson vs. negative-ranked Syracuse . . . on Clemson to win.\u00a0 And at -100,000 odds, the payout on Clemson\u2019s inevitable victory would be an $8.60 payout<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Either this person is a Clemson homer\/grad, and\/or they really don\u2019t understand how sports betting works.\u00a0 And\/or they are just dumb.\u00a0 Most likely all of the above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Honestly, before I clown too much on this guy, I\u2019ve kind of been there before.\u00a0 Betting on sports isn\u2019t as cut and dry as it is amongst casual friends, where everything is a pretty straight up bet.\u00a0 But to do it on a book, it\u2019s vastly more complicated, and usually involves match-ups that aren\u2019t so overwhelmingingly favored in one direction as it was between Clemson and Syracuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In 2005, I felt really good about the Washington Redskins\u2019 chances against the Seattle Seachickens in the playoffs, as the Redskins were riding momentum, and the Seahawks were going to be without Shaun Alexander when he was still good.\u00a0 I actually called up a sports book that I\u2019d been hearing advertised on television, and whereas I thought it would be as simple to just say I wanted to put $50 on the Redskins, I quickly learned that it\u2019s vastly more complicated.\u00a0 Such as money lines, spreads and partial games, but ultimately I went with the straight money bet, since that\u2019s all I wanted, and I stood to make like $75 if the Redskins were to pull off the upset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/boxscores\/200601140sea.htm\">Naturally, I lost<\/a>, because , because the Redskins are the Redskins and I\u2019ve literally never won a sports bet in my life, but I learned a little something about sports betting that evening.\u00a0 Mostly, that it doesn\u2019t really have any meaning unless the matchup is remotely competitive, which is something that pretty much any college football game featuring Clemson is not, to the point where lots of books won\u2019t even offer straight money bets on Clemson, because they win every game by like 40 points, and they don\u2019t want to pay $8.60 to the 400 oafs who take the sure-lock bet, because that\u2019s still $3,400 they lose, even if it would have netted them $3.4 million if the upset were to occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I get it though, kinda.\u00a0 This loser with $8,600 to blow wanted to boast about how much they gamble, and conveniently leave out the fine details, like how they\u2019re betting on the best college football team of the last decade, against a school that\u2019s more known for basketball than football.\u00a0 They brag to their friends and over social media about how much money they\u2019re risking, and when they inevitably win, they\u2019ll brag about winning, but fail to mention the odds or how minuscule risk there actually was.\u00a0 If it\u2019s not stupidity, then it\u2019s all a really excessive effort dog and pony show for the internets;
