{"id":47497,"date":"2020-12-11T22:25:26","date_gmt":"2020-12-12T03:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=47497"},"modified":"2020-12-12T12:23:56","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T17:23:56","slug":"advent-beer-11-grandl-by-ankerbrau-nordlingen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=47497","title":{"rendered":"Advent Beer #11: Grandl by Ankerbr\u00e4u N\u00f6rdlingen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignright wp-image-47498\" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_9938.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_9938.jpg 786w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_9938-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_9938-671x1024.jpg 671w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_9938-768x1173.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Eleven days in, I think I\u2019ve made it pretty clear that I don\u2019t really know much about beer, and that I most certainly judge books by their covers.\u00a0 That said, I had optimistic hopes for tonight\u2019s beer as I\u2019ve been not having the greatest time with job these days and drinking on Fridays always seems like a good idea after a long week of work, and I was wondering if whomever put together this advent calendar had the wherewithal to put some quality beers on the Fridays of the calendar, because it\u2019s not like they wouldn\u2019t be able to look at a calendar to know when they are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So when I pulled Grandl out of the fridge, I was pleased to see a fairly traditional, nondescript beer can design that reminded me of a throwback style like a Miller High Life can or like the Milwaukee Brewers typeface, which are kind of the same things considering Miller\u2019s influence with the Brew Crew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But anyway it\u2019s almost like this can was a metaphor for the beer itself, because out of the can came a clean, golden lager with not a lot of aroma.\u00a0 The first sips were positive, but not really blown away; everything about this beer seemed pretty no-nonsense, nothing special, but at the same time not at all bad, and very drinkable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The fact that BeerAdvocate lists this as simply \u201clager\u201d and not like \u201cfestlager\u201d or \u201calleybier\u201d or \u201ckellerbrau\u201d or some other weird classification I\u2019d never heard of until embarking on this journey, brings everything back to earth for something simple, basic, yet perfectly adequate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sure, it\u2019s not bursting with flavor like Turbo Prop (#6) or has the explosive characteristics of a good dunkel like Kirta (#5), but it\u2019s still a classic, smooth beer that goes down smooth, doesn\u2019t overstimulate my novice pallet, and is something I know I could drink 2-3 of without breaking a sweat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Either way, I\u2019m gassed.\u00a0 I found myself already beginning to fall asleep at 8:45, while trying to watch <em>Scrooge<\/em> virtually with some friends, but such shouldn\u2019t be a surprise considering I\u2019m raising an infant that\u2019s up by 6:30 every morning.\u00a0 And I thought I was all ahead of the curve by knocking out all of my daily chores and running earlier in the day that I\u2019d be able to have a ton of time to myself to wind down the evening, but now all I want to do is go to bed before 11 pm and actually feel like I can get some sleep, so this review is about as long as most of the other beer reviews but is in fact full of fluff and talking about how I\u2019m wrapping this up but overall, Grandl was solid, refreshing, and it\u2019s general position in the rankings don\u2019t do it justice as much as it shows where it stands to other beers with stronger gimmicks and more memorability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Current Rankings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">First Coral (#2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Kirta (#5)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Turbo Prop (#6)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Perlenzauber (#9)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Jubil\u00e4umsbier 333 (#7)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Zw\u00f6nitzer Steinbier (#4)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Grandl (#11)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hell (#1)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tannen Hell (#8)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tradition (#10)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">K\u00e4uzle (#3)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eleven days in, I think I\u2019ve made it pretty clear that I don\u2019t really know much about beer, and that I most certainly judge books by their covers.\u00a0 That said, I had optimistic hopes for tonight\u2019s beer as I\u2019ve been not having the greatest time with job these days and drinking on Fridays always seems &hellip;
