{"id":49615,"date":"2023-10-04T12:34:52","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T17:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=49615"},"modified":"2023-10-06T12:35:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T17:35:00","slug":"dad-brog-121-when-we-do-what-our-parents-did","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/totfc.net\/?p=49615","title":{"rendered":"Dad Brog (#121): When we do what our parents did"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-image alignnone wp-image-49616 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jook.jpg 560w, https:\/\/totfc.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jook-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">#2 is sick and honestly in perspective it hasn\u2019t been nearly as terrible as it\u2019s been in the years past with the girls getting sick all the time.\u00a0 Perhaps the world has kind of caught up to the backlog of colds, flus and other gross ailments and bugs.\u00a0 Perhaps my kids\u2019 immune systems have grown stronger from the onslaughts of colds, flus and other gross ailments and bugs over their short existences.\u00a0 Maybe both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Back to the point though, my youngest is sick right now, and it\u2019s never easy on the soul as a parent when your kid is struggling through fever, discomfort and a body in revolt.\u00a0 Nothing wants to be kept down, but she needs to stay hydrated, but consuming anything too fast results in it coming back up, so it\u2019s a delicate game of trying to feed slow and steady so she doesn\u2019t starve, but not too much lest it all comes back up and defeats the purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Feed a cold, starve a fever, is what I always remember hearing.\u00a0 I sure as heck didn\u2019t really feel like eating when I was ailing just days prior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Regardless, I felt it was probably best to keep any foods simple and stay away from the dairy and yogurts that my kids tend to eat when things are normal, but the options weren\u2019t that many at my house which hasn\u2019t yet fully reset and restocked since we returned from vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">That being said, given the circumstances of #2\u2019s condition, I decided to take a page out of my mom\u2019s book and take a stab at making jook (\uc8fd) which is basically a porridge made out of rice, or as lesser Asians know it as congee.\u00a0 It was something my mom often made for me when I was a kid and suffering from keeping anything complex down, and I had memories of just how soothing it could be when you weren\u2019t feeling well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It also didn\u2019t help-actually helped that I woke up at 5:30 this morning for no real reason, so I had an adequate amount of time to simmer and render down the rice and liquid before the kids woke up, and make a halfway passable \uc8fd.\u00a0 The real question mark was going to be, would my kids like it?\u00a0 They\u2019re at a finicky eating stage in life currently, but they do like it when I make fried rice, so there\u2019s a chance that they might like rice in a different presentation, right??<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fortunately, after some morning snuggles, an explanation that the following recipe is something that <em>halmoni<\/em> (grandma) made for me when I was a kid, and I was going to make it for her, #2 actually ended up liking the \uc8fd, much to my joyful satisfaction.\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s basically mushy rice in a porridge consistency, and it takes to the same flavors as any ordinary rice.\u00a0 So with a drop or two of soy sauce to give it some flavor, it has the same taste, but also goes down really smooth and is easy to digest, and I\u2019m hoping that the pot of the \uc8fd I made can last another day or two and by then I hope she\u2019s all better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Unsurprisingly, #1 saw what her sister was eating and was curious, and turns out that she thought it was pretty good as well.\u00a0 Great knowledge to have for when inevitably she gets sick too, that both my kids like the same stuff that I liked when I was a kid, and it does make me happy to do something like my mom did for me, for my own kids when they\u2019re sick.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>#2 is sick and honestly in perspective it hasn\u2019t been nearly as terrible as it\u2019s been in the years past with the girls getting sick all the time.\u00a0 Perhaps the world has kind of caught up to the backlog of colds, flus and other gross ailments and bugs.\u00a0 Perhaps my kids\u2019 immune systems have grown &hellip;
