Black it in, black it in

I was running on the treadmill the other day, and I watched a news report about how there is a law that is trying to be passed nationwide.  A law that states by the year 2014, all new cars will be required to have rear-view cameras.  They could have left it at just that, and I wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but then the Atlanta iteration of the news proceeds to state that the rationale behind such mandatory requirement would be so that it would become safer to cars to park in reverse.  Safer for cars to back it into parking spaces.  Safer for ridez to black it in.

There’s something ironically humorous that a state whose capital has what feels like a 90% black population, wanting to pass a law for cars to have mandatory rear-view cameras, for the express purpose to make backing into parking spaces easier.

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH.

Supermarket Offers Black History Month Special on Fried Chicken

Wednesday, February 06, 2002

Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Giant Food Stores apologized Wednesday after one of its supermarkets advetised a sale on fried chicken in honor of Black History Month.

The chain’s Union Deposit store in Dauphin County had a sign Sunday saying, “In honor of Black History Month, we at Giant are offering a special savings on fried chicken.”

“It did happen. It was at that one store only,” said Denny Hopkins, Giant’s vice president of advertising. “We had a customer bring the sign to us and complain and we immediately took it down.”

“We apologize if that sign offended our customers,” Hopkins said.

Store customer Lance Sellers, 31, of Highspire, said he was shocked and embarrassed when he first saw the sign.

“I showed it to a few of the other customers … all races of people … and they all were stunned. When I approached the store manager about the problem he had the nerve to ask me why it offended me so much.”

Hopkins said the sign was not meant to be offensive. He said he did not know who made the decision to put up the sign.

Paula Diane Harris, president of the Greater Harrisburg Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the sign reinforces racist stereotypes.

“Not all African-Americans eat fried chicken, greens and chitlins. We like salad, roast beef, low-fat chicken, just like everybody else,” she said.

Giant is sponsoring several programs for Black History Month, including having jazz bands and soul food samples at its Kline Village Plaza and Union Deposit stores, Hopkins said.

Sellers said the sign, which he still has, wouldn’t keep him from shopping at the store.

“We laugh about it,” he said. “How could they put something like that out there?”

BHM query: Why the insistence on walking in the middle of the street?

Oh no, I haven’t forgotten about Black History Month.  I’ve just had several other things occupying my time and writing fulfillments recently, and to be honest, I haven’t been agitated recently to where I’d want to verbally retaliate.  Until yesterday.  It’s bad enough that yesterday was my last day at my previous assignment, that I had to turn down work because it was going to cockblock my chances to get in with a company I really want to get with, but on my way home from work, there were about three emergency vehicles that necessitated pulling off to the side of the road and yield to them.  Each time I courteously moved aside for an ambulance or fire truck, I would have to wait a little bit longer than necessary to get back on track, because each time, there were at least four vehicles, driven by you-know-whats, that were essentially tailgating emergency vehicles, thus preventing me from getting back onto the road without waiting for their aggressive, me-first driving behavior to pass first.

So, now that I’m all agitated and shit again, I have to ask:

Why do black people always have to walk in the middle of the street?

BHM query: Why the aversion to using turn signals?

After the first few queries, a tiny part of me kind of felt guilty, a little remorseful that I was making posts like these.  Slightly reluctant to buy into the popular notion that I’m not so much of a critical individual not afraid to speak about the taboo topic of racial stereotypes, but just a straight up racist (which I vehemently deny, since that would mean I hate 100% of a particular demographic which is genuinely false).

But all that guilt was quickly washed away this morning, when my leisurely drive into work today was soured by an impatient, militant pitbull of a black woman who decided to lay down on the horn of her car because I couldn’t read minds.  Which brings me to the latest query in honor of Black History Month:

What in history led to the modern day aversion that black people have with utilizing turn signals?

BHM query: Youths and cell phones

I haven’t done a single assignment today, and I’m genuinely curious to how much longer this place can justify having any freelancers, let alone two, to sit here and essentially get paid to do nothing on days like this. Needless to say, I’m really bored, and there’s only so much wikipedia I can read before my eyes feel like they’re going to fall out of their sockets. So that beings said, let’s ask another question for black history month:

Why do black teenagers feel the need to pretend like they’re on their cell phones when they’re clearly not using them?

Again, this could be an “Atlanta-thing,” but without fail, whenever I go to the store, there will always be at least one 15-25 year old black person who has a cell phone against their ear, but they never say anything back to it. Because, they’re not actually on a phone call.

BHM query: Using the mailbox from inside the car

This morning, I had a close call, when a black female cop almost rear-ended me for going the posted 25 mph speed limit on a road that she typically monitors like a Nazi.  Because, she was trying to multitask and was on her in-car computer (yeah, she was that close that I could tell what she was doing), probably running my plates looking for an excuse to pull me over since I was obviously obliging to the speed limit.  And then she almost rear-ended me again when I actually came to a complete stop at the posted stop sign.  My annoyance in the world rose again to where I remembered I was doing something this month.

What historic events led to African-Americans insisting on retrieving mail from their mailbox from within their cars?

BHM query: Why the need to back into parking spaces?

The name of the game is reverse psychology.  The lemon’s in the shop again, but at least it’s for reasons I knew existed, and knew were coming.  But it doesn’t change the fact that I had to wake up at ass o’clock in order to be the first person at the shop, only for them to wait about two hours to even take my car for a shakedown.  Needless to say, with my entire morning more or less wasted, with it about to encroach into my afternoon, here’s temping fate.  I’m sitting at the adjacent Starbucks, tired of reading, and settling into a writing mentality.  It will be during this time that the shop will call me to update me on my car.  With that in mind…

What historical events led to the disposition of the overwhelming majority of African-Americans preferring to back into parking spaces?
