Oh, Atlanta #543

Wince-worthy: Atlanta’s HIV diagnosis percentages compare to, wait for it, Africa.

This is pretty much the face I made when I read the headline; just the headline.  Not just any old part of Africa, but the Third World status parts of Africa.

Like, I know it’s a serious issue, and AIDS shouldn’t really be a laughing matter, but come on now.  Busting out a story like this is just begging for all sorts of criticism, but given the fact that depending on whom you ask in the media, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, WSB is swinging at some pretty low-hanging fruit at releasing an article like this one.

It’s no secret that Atlanta is a city with an extremely heavy African-American population.  But then to go and seek out scientific evidence that a predominantly African-American area actually share one of the less reputable stereotypes about Africans in Third World Africa in general?  That’s some fucked up shit, man.

A wince-worthy double standard

I’ve been out of touch.  To no surprise.  Heck, even at the time I’m writing this, my brog is still down, en route to its new home, and I’ve been dealing with varying degrees of separation anxiety with my greatest and longest-tenured hobby, but the point remains, I’ve been out of touch with day-to-day current events, and struggling to find time or want to continue writing, without my platform.  And this is the first of many topics that I’m trying to use to jumpstart my writing muscles, and hope for the best.

Anyway, I was going into work one day, and I couldn’t help but notice that there were a few notable buildings that I see on the drive, that had their flags at half-mast.  Clearly, something had happened, and I grew curious to what major event could have happened to have made the decision to go flags at half-mast was.

I got into the office, and I took a few minutes to look on CNN, to see if there was anything major that happened somewhere in the world; nothing.  Perhaps it was at a more local magnitude, something that happened in the state, that is making just Georgians fly Old Glory at half-mast?  So in spite of my endless criticism towards the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, I still went on AJC, because criticism aside, they’re fairly up-to-date on things.

Black people double standards

In spite of everything I may or may not write out, I’m a fan of Chris Rock.  I have enjoyed most every one of Rock’s standups, and I think he’s a step above most other comics out there; dare I say almost on a Seinfeld-like plane in which he makes observations and turns it into material that most people can relate to, but just don’t think about, until presented in a routine.

I don’t view him as “a black comic,” but as “a comic,” and one that is funny, witty, intelligent and genuinely good at his craft.  Furthermore, as he’s aged, he’s flexed his creative wings and done some solid writing, as well as being pretty much the token A-list black guy for Adam Sandler (Tim Meadows being the B) films throughout the last few years.

But his choice of material at the Oscars, where he basically made several tasteless jokes towards Asian stereotypes, was pretty pathetic.  They reeked of strawman deflection, where Rock attempted to distract attendees and viewers away from the elephant in the room, which is the purported black boycott of the Oscars, and make wise cracks about Asians as a means to draw attention away from the elephant.

Why are protesters so stupid?

Long story short: people protested in front of Smyrna city hall over the decision to promote a police officer, who had shot and killed a man who attempted to evade a warrant arrest by stealing a Maserati and driving at police.

Seriously, why are protesters so stupid? They’re clamoring for “justice” for a guy that stole a car and tried to run over some cops. In the cops’ case it was kill, or be killed.

The funny thing is that the people protesting all seem to have this idea that the cop was promoted solely as a reward for killing a black guy; it’s like they have no understanding of promotion schedules, tenure, and a record of commendations that could lead to a promotion. Not really a “hey, good job shooting that colored fella, have a promotion!”

Irony is

Slapping a Confederate stars & bars sticker on your Japanese Acura CL family sedan.

bahahaha.

I saw this while I was coming home from work.  I was expecting to have a fairly unpleasant slog through a route of traffic that I knew that I would be facing regularly from now on, but I have to admit that seeing this amusing unity of conflicting automotive elements made the drive a little more tolerable, as I found myself laughing over this several times over throughout the crawl.

Oh, Atlanta #266

Long story short: waitress at crappy Atlanta Mexican restaurant addresses concerns over the presence of a noose hanging in the kitchen, ultimately gets fired for complaining.

I love the choice of words used in the CBS article

what appears to be a noose

Uh, make no mistake, that’s a noose, no matter what angle, direction or way you look at it. I don’t think it can be mistaken for a pulley or a windsor knot or some sort of special rope tying method used to unearth a tree stump or something. It’s a noose, specifically used to hang people – to death. Snap their neck, asphyxiation, doesn’t matter.

I have a hard time believing this is real

Source: Whitesboro, New York, votes to keep village’s seal, despite allegations that it is racist, as it features a white man choking a Native American.

My first thought when I came across this story was that there was no way this could actually be true.  No place in America could really be represented by such imagery, right?  A white man choking a Native American, surely, there’s nothing wrong with that?

I honestly thought this was a fake, The Onion-like satire post that was kind of trying to go the route of Parks & Recreation, and all of the horrifically shameful murals all over Pawnee City Hall.  I mean, why wouldn’t artwork of a white guy choking an Indian go hand-in-hand with public bare-knuckle fighting between men and women?
