The door is ajar

Admittedly, I’ve had a hard time finding the motivation to write lately, which sucks a little bit more considering my general desire to have at least a post every weekday.  It’s been somewhat challenging on some days, but given the fact that there are about 17-18 waking hours of each day, usually something piques my interest, or a thought pops into my head that is adequate enough to get the words flowing.

The thing is right now, I’m apparently using a lot of my concentration these days in preparation for Dragon*Con, which as of the time I’m writing this is a hair over two weeks away.  This isn’t something that should be the least bit worrisome for your average attendee, but being one of those weirdoes that likes to have a costume for D*C means that two weeks isn’t so much a chunk of time we’re wishing to erode faster, contrarily, we’re wishing we had more of it.

Needless to say, I’m trying my hardest to not let the thoughts of doubt creep into my psyche, and make me feel like I’ve got an insurmountable boulder to drag up the hill.  I do feel as if I’m making some decent progress, in spite of the fact that I’ve had an immensely difficult time in getting the wheels turning over the summer, and in all frankness I shouldn’t be in this situation had I gotten my ass in gear at an earlier time.

Having neat summers

I’ve been in kind of a funk lately.  Not quite emo-y depression, but not necessarily cheerful and content with everything. I’m not excited about anything at all, and I’m finding it difficult to get motivated to do anything outside of my core daily activities.  This does not bode well, considering the numerous things that I wish to accomplish before the end of August, for when Dragon*Con rolls around again.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like my summers have become somewhat formulaic, which might be a logical root of some of this discontent.  Over the last few years, my summers have been dictated by baseball trips and Dragon*Con.  Now I’m not saying I don’t dislike either of those things any less this year, but I think there’s a part of me that thinks that perhaps I should seek out a break from the ordinary soon.

Marriott rooms and the importance of failure

A long time ago, I wrote this manifesto on Talking Chop about the importance of defeat.  Braves fans were getting a little too complacent with the idea that the Braves were a competent potential contender that season, and the populous got a little too out of control insufferable when the Braves lost a series against a non-contender, and me being one of the Nazi mods of the site at the time, took it upon myself to instead admonish and ban people, to educate them about the importance of losing.

The main point was basically that victory has no importance if there was never any risk of losing.  Victory cannot be sweet if defeat is not bitter.  Without the fear of failure, there is no gratification when there is success.

Not only does this apply to just sports, it applies to just about any endeavor, where there is either success or failure.  The greater chance for failure versus the difficulty of success makes victory that much sweeter if it’s achieved.

Riot Graves costume construction: fin

Alrighty then, Dragon*Con is a month beyond us now, and I feel like I’ve caught up on a lot of things in terms of writing, processing pictures, more writing, and simply getting back into the swing of things. That being said, I realized that I never followed through with my promises to myself and to my seven readers that I’d do my best to chronicle the construction of the Riot Graves gun for the costume I wore at Dragon*Con, and subsequently the other costume components.

So, unlike the LeBlanc staff process that I compartmentalized into many small posts, screw that, I’m just going to go straight into covering everything I possibly can, as detailed as I can, as it came to the construction of the Riot Graves gun, as well as the armor pieces and other doodads necessary to put together the Riot Graves costume.

Admittedly, there aren’t going to be nearly as many photos as I hoped there would be, because frankly there were points during the construction where there simply wasn’t time. Either I would be against the clock against chemical pot life and cure times, or after my haphazard minor league baseball trip, I was against the clock with Dragon*Con quickly approaching. I suppose inquiring minds will have to settle with my intrepid writing abilities instead at certain points.

Dragon*Con 2013 Parting Thoughts

Overall, I can say that Dragon*Con was a pretty good time, and about what I expect out of the D*C experience on a yearly basis.  I got to see and hang out with a bunch of people, I took a lot of pictures, and I shared good food and drink with decent folks.  Sometimes I think it’s a little absurd that I dump a ton of money into doing such things, but eh, it’s once a year, why the heck not?

A couple of notable things happened during my weekend – like spending most of Friday night at the hospital because one of my friends called me and explained his dire need to go to urgent care out of the blue (nothing severe, but still necessary).  Then there was the ironically good sense of mind I had on one night to decide to sleep on the floor that prevented me from getting puked on that makes me realize how lucky I was on one evening.  And then there’s the always fun instances of watching a fellow nerd decide to handcuff himself in proposed matrimony that always is a joyous occasion at D*C.  Hospitals, puking and engagements, oh my.

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Sunday

Oh, Sunday night of Dragon*Con, the last night of the convention we so look forward to for an entire year.  Often times it’s the night we let the most loose, and for some of us (me) it’s the night we tend to get the drunkest.  Fortunately for me, there was no Four Loko in the house this year, so there was absolutely no way I was going to get a retarded drunk as I had gotten in previous years.  However, I did have a snazzy mason jar full of peach moonshine that I was sharing shots with, with several friends and acquaintances, and it appeared to go over pretty well with everyone.  I will definitely have to make a stop for more of this the next time I am passing through South Carolina.

A funny thing happened on Sunday of this year’s Dragon*Con.  In all of the years that I’d been attending, I couldn’t remember a single time when it actually rained substantially during the convention itself.  Maybe a morning drizzle or some light sprinkling, but never before had I seen a year where there was some spontaneous torrential downpour, and people fleeing into hotels and anywhere they could get refuge from the rain.

But anyway, this is a picture post, so I’ll keep the words to a minimum.  I’ll see about putting down my thoughts of the convention as a whole at another time perhaps, or unless I do it before posting this one on a timer, but forgetting to go back and delete this paragraph, lol.  Whatever happens, happens!

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Saturday (LoL candids)

But of course I had a secondary camera I had on me while taking part of the League of Legends shooting!

The good news is that instead of my busted old Sony Cybershot I had for a secondary camera, I had something that was able to at least take shots in focus.  However, it’s still a plain point-and-shoot, so the flash tends to eat things alive, but at least the subjects were in focus.

Much like last year, since there’s a lot of waiting and standing around, while rangling LoL costumers and taking turns with who’s shooting with the marvelous Joseph Chi Lin, I figure there’s plenty of time to take random candid shots of my friends as well as other LoL costumers.  And sweet merciful jesus were there a lot of LoL costumers hanging around this year.
