Photos: Scarecrows in the Garden

As has been the case over the last two years now, I decided to hit up the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for their annual Scarecrows in the Garden exhibit where local individuals, groups and businesses throughout the area create various scarecrows that are displayed throughout the garden grounds.

None of it’s necessarily Scary Stories in the Dark caliber, but it’s sometimes nice to just walk around and see what people come up with.  And the weather this time of year is often pleasant, and it’s something that really feels like the start of the fall for me.

In praise of good art

My friend Katie sent me this link the other day, and I don’t necessarily remember the context behind it, although I think involved overzealous costumers. Regardless, I found the artwork of these tattoo-style Disney princess pin-ups to be wonderful, and I think that they’re all visually alluring and magnificently executed. Personally, my favorite Disney princess has always been Snow White, which I can’t really explain beyond an aesthetic preference of colors and appearance, in comparison to the others.

Anyway, I was captivated by the artwork, and wished to see more, so it prompted me to Google the artist, Tim Shumate, which efficiently led to his portfolio site where I could peruse through more of it.

Personally, it’s my belief that we often times take things on the internet for granted, and are not quick or willing to drop someone a line when it comes to sharing some appreciation. Since Tim had a contact form available on his site, I dropped him a brief message telling him how much I loved his stuff, and here I am brogging about it on top of it, because I wanted something to write about, and his stuff puts me in a pleasant mood and makes me want to write about it to share with more people.

Jen recently made a scarecrow for the Atlanta Botanical Gardens’ fall something-or-other whatever festival/occasion. With a twitter theme, Madame de Tweet was easily one of the better scarecrows at the garden.  Some of them weren’t even scarecrows, as much as it looked like some people were phoning in their designs, but hey, not everyone can be somewhat artistic either.

Round 2 of Art League Atlanta action, as Jen advanced to the second round, with the winner going all the way to the finals.  Not really a whole lot for me to say about the whole concept, or the art in itself, but it was still a fun evening with some friends, where thankfully, I didn’t get nearly as trashed as I did in round 1, which had me waking up the next morning with a bit of a hangover.  It’s quite a scene, with a myriad of types of people, lots of drinking, lots of people pretending to be photographers, and quite a few chicks practically wearing nothing but paint, pasties and panties.

As for Jen and her opponent, the best analogy I have for the situation is that it was like 80s-90s WWF women’s division, where Alundra Blayze was the champion.  She was also thin, in shape, and blonde.  And since it’s easy for the fans to assume that the pretty champion was the good guy, Vince McMahon always fed her a steady diet of opponents that were weird, not-quite as good looking, and a tad on the rotund side.  Perfect analogy.

She also did a whole lot of weird abstract art, which made absolutely no sense to me, whenever I glanced at her execution.  Oh, she’s using a hair dryer on her piece… but it doesn’t really change the fact that it still kinda sucked.  Now I don’t pretend that I have some extensive art background, despite the fact that I’m somewhat of an artist myself for a living, but seriously, no fucking clue.  Smashed up plexiglass with red paint watered down, splattered onto it, and then forcefully dried with a hair dryer doesn’t really result in something at all that visually appealing, let alone sellable for actual United States currency.

But no matter, I’m only mean because of her sore loser, poorly veiled remarks towards Jen and her work.  Because Jen defeated her fairly easily in the end, to the surprise of pretty much nobody present, so in the end, it could be said that the evening was pretty successful on all accounts.

Empty threat valid until the next time the opportunity presents itself: I’m never going to drink liquor again.

An evening of artsy-fartsy art-off between talented artists, to see who is the best artist under fire, with spontaneous criteria.  Many of us go to support Jen’s pursuit to be that best artist, and she advances past the first round fairly soundly.  As for the rest of us not participating, gratuitous drinking.  I’ll be the first to admit that as I got drunker, the more spontaneous the photos, the blurrier they became, and the funnier my own jokes became, and eventually it devolved into pointing out the King of Hipsters, and Justin Bieber, among other spontaneous shit I may or may not have said or remembered saying throughout the course of the evening.
