Photos: Jinx/Fishbones photoshoot candids

Note: the following post is from approximately one year ago, held back as a courtesy.

Good things happen when involved parties collaborate.  I came along to help out where I could with a photoshoot that featured Jen’s Jinx costume, the finished Fishbones bazooka by Volpin Props, shot by Joseph Chi Lin.

Obviously, this is relevant to my interests as Jinx is one of my favorite LoL characters, and all involved parties are what I’d consider friendly, so I can say that in spite of poor weather and typical Georgia summer heat, I had a good time taking part, and making a directional suggestion or two in my own right.

I thought it would be a good idea to bring my own camera, because I thought I’d want to take pictures of the street graffiti of the Krog Street tunnel, but ultimately, nothing in particular in the caught my fancy, due to the incestual mishmash of tags upon tags upon tags creating a whole lot of artistic vomit.

But it was good that I did, because I was able to take some candids of the processes of setting up our area, a few shots in between poses, and just a behind-the-scenes feel of what turned out to be an awesome example of talented parties collaborating for the sake of good art.

To write, or not to write

All six of my regular readers are probably aware of my general desire to post something at least once a weekday.  They may or may not have noticed that I haven’t posted anything over the last few days too.

That thing I have that most people wouldn’t believe called “the girlfriend” works an unorthodox schedule, which leaves her “weekend” somewhere in the middle of the week, as opposed to the traditional Saturday-Sunday.  I had some mid-week travel plans that went awry, AKA an inexplicable number of people decided to go where I wanted to go on the exact same dates I wanted to go, therefore there was no room on any flights to my destination.  So, I decided to scrap the trip, not go to work anyway, and spend my girlfriend’s weekend, with my girlfriend.

However, those were two days in which I wasn’t sitting at a computer, writing about nonsensical things, or trying to find nonsensical things to write about.  Actually, that’s not entirely true, because I was in front of a computer at times, but that was time spent playing, you’ll never believe this, League of Legends.

I’m never playing Team Builder again

Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of Summoner’s Rift games, because I’ve been swayed by the appeal of champion mastery, and the desire to get my favorite champions to a maximum level of “mastery.” Ultimately, my desire to “master” Jinx, because she’s one of my favorite champions, and my preferred role in the game is to be an AD carry.

I’ve avoided blind pick and draft modes, because there’s no surefire way to guarantee that I’ll get to play Jinx when I want to play Jinx, so I’ve been playing a lot of Team Builder, so that I can lock in Jinx, and it’ll pair me/fill me into a team that can accommodate. Playing Team Builder is pretty much the worst mode on the planet.

I’ve lost way more games than I’ve won while in Team Builder.  And the nature of champion mastery is basically along the lines of “win and get like 10,000 experience points towards the champion, lose and you get like 42.” Regardless of how you do as an individual, the amount of points you get rests primarily on whether you win the game or not; like earlier on the day, I had a game, where I went 9/4/11 with Jinx, was easily the most useful player on the team, but on account of my team’s inability to win, I got 35 mastery points.  The opposing AD carry who I killed six times, and a vastly less glowing KDA score, probably got like 4,235 mastery points, because they were carried to victory by an Ekko player who was vastly superior to my team’s inevitable Ekko player.

Photos: MomoCon 2015, Saturday

As is seemingly the norm when it comes to weekend conventions these days, more impressive costumes tend to emerge on the Saturday, and such was the case at MomoCon this year as well.

Again, I didn’t take nearly as many pictures as I know I’m capable of taking, but the fact of the matter is that frankly, there weren’t as many things I wanted to take pictures of as opposed to things I did. Perhaps I’m overly picky, or maybe my head wasn’t quite in the game this weekend, but these are all the pictures that I took on Saturday.

I went back to a more versatile 17-70 kit lens on this day, and ultimately, I feel that the results of some of the portrait shots are better. Ultimately, there’s still a galaxy-sized chasm room for improvement, but for what it’s worth, the space to operate in the GWCC and lots of natural lighting make it a preferable place for a novice like me to want to take pictures.

Photos: MomoCon 2015, Friday

Without further ado, here are pictures I took from the Friday of this year’s MomoCon.

There aren’t a tremendous amount of pictures in general, because I’m a picky picture taker that gives favoritism towards friends, fandoms and nostalgia, and I have a tendency to pass over things I’ve seen before, unless I’m that enamored by them that much.

This particular day, I was using a wide-angle lens which is great at taking pictures at close range while still being able to get a wide expanse of view, but I’m an amateur that never practices, so the focusing on it was questionable sometimes.

Why people say they hate League of Legends

The following graphic is my last six games. You might notice that they are mostly defeats. You might also notice that they are also Summoner’s Rift games. I do not play a lot of Summoner’s Rift games these days; I typically play a lot of All-Random-All-Mid (ARAM) games with my girlfriend, because they’re quicker, and the random player select for all participants absolves all players of such nagging details like responsibility and skill, and sometimes they’re tremendously fun when you and/or other players get to play a little mad scientist with how to build out a character for varying results.

Summoner’s Rift games are typically way longer, and play to what’s known as a “meta,” basically meaning a traditionally accepted form in which the game should be played, with specific positions, roles, and styles that is expected of those players designated to each role. Personally, I feel that playing games to a style because that’s what’s expected is kind of stale, boring, and tedious.

Summoner’s Rift games are also what is played on the professional level, so the alleged millions and millions of League of Legends’ player base are playing the exact same game that kids all around the globe are paid serious money to do so.

Photos: League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational

So after a few years of watching LoL streams, the east coast of the United States was finally thrown a bone with an actual League event, with the arrival of the first annual Mid-Season Invitational.  The good news was that it was within reasonable driving distance for me, however the bad news was that it was held in Tallahassee, Florida, and most notably, on Florida State campus.

Florida State blows, but since it would be nice to actually attend and see a notable League event, sacrifices had to be made.

Anyway, as a whole, I thought the event was pretty good.  MSI proved that there are in fact, serious LoL fans on the east coast, and hopefully this will be a promising sign that perhaps more things might come to the east coast; maybe not such a shithole like Tallahassee, and perhaps a place that’s easily accessible by anyone via plane, car or internationally, has facilities to host, as well as an existing culture, like say one of the Collegiate teams, like in, oh, I don’t know, like Atlanta*cough?
