Occasionally, there are things that go on in the world and in the lives of people in my own little bubble, that I wonder if these are things that every generation goes through. Take for example, as my general generation of people are all climbing out of their 30s and some into their 40s, we’re entering stages of our lives where peoples’ parents begin to ascend into ages where life expectancy is nearing their ends, and there’s occasionally the somber conversation that comes up where family members have passed away. Undoubtedly, this is something that every generation goes through, as Father Time is unbeatable and everyone eventually goes.
But the inspiration of this post is unfortunately politics. It doesn’t take people with the power of enhanced sight to see that it’s a powder keg of a topic and the most volatile thing to possibly discuss in the world these days, and there are people who are smart enough to keep their mouths shut and keep their opinions to themselves in public, and then there’s everyone else who just can’t manage to shut the fuck up about politics.
I didn’t imagine the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg would have bothered me much, since usually the passing of anyone in Washington is met with who cares indifference. But RBG meant a whole lot to a lot of people, and even casual news followers like me had heard plenty about her stances, accomplishments and general grit and determination throughout her career and her life. And seeing the reaction of many of my internet friends, both female and male, about their general disappointment at her passing, puts into perspective for people like me just how big of a loss this is to a country that desperately needs strong people like her in it.
As sad and as much of a loss it was with RBG’s passing, what predictably happened next was no less nauseating and disappointing, no matter how inevitable it was; in spite of the fact that in previous instances of a justice passing away in an election year, their replacement was held off until after the elections, but shocking nobody, the baked potato and his cronies are going to do everything in their power to fastrack another hand-picked stooge to fill RBG’s seat as fast as humanly possible.
This, has unfortunately overshadowed the news of RBG’s passing, as this administration has the power to take absolutely anything in the country, and turn it political, obviously ruining everything it touches.
And it is just makes me really sad and further disgusted at the state of our country and not a day goes by where I don’t mutter that America sucks right now. I don’t even remember what was going through my head otherwise, but I was sitting in my car at a Bojangles’ drive-thru line, and I just had some thought that made me just feel disgusted and grumbling about how America sucked, and how disappointed and disgusted I felt living in it, and raising a daughter in it.
Going back to the original topic of wondering if things were as bad back in prior generations compared to today, and I’d often wondered if generations in the past ever had it as bad as we do now, in terms of people who were disgusted by the president sitting in office. And to some degree, sure, they absolutely did; look no further than Obama’s two terms, and all the people miserable at the thought of some black guy in the highest office in the land. And then there were all the left-leaners before that, miserable with Dubya sitting in the office, endlessly waging war on the Middle East.
But the reason why I think that this is undoubtedly the worst era of politics ever is pretty simple – the internet. Sure, the internet had long been a part of the Obama administration, as well as the Dubya administration, but it’s never been as prevalent, advanced and as far as it is now, as it is, now. Social media is an actual, defined thing, there’s Twitter, there’s TikTok, there’s Facebook, there’s all sort of various platforms where everyone has a voice and god damn uses them, and sitting in front of a computer is often tantamount to being in stadiums, packed to the gills with people, all blathering on about this and that and often times, politics.
And through the internet is tons of free and available information on how people involved in the world of politics can make things more insufferable and miserable for the rest of the country. Earlier today, there was someone at my door, which is always a colossal inconvenience since I have a very spazz of a dog that barks at god damn everything, which is very counterproductive when I’ve got a baby on a nap schedule. Through the window, I could see it was some lady, but she wasn’t wearing a mask and I wasn’t going to bother opening the door to see what she wanted. Moments later, I saw her put something on my doorknob and walk off; when I opened the door to see what it was, I was disgusted to see that it was some shit about the baked potato making Georgia great, and I didn’t read any further because my hands had already reflexively ripped it into confetti. The thing is, she put it on my door, hopped in her car and drove off, as opposed to sequentially going house-to-house to (illegally) solicit.
I have to assume my address was on some list of hers, and it’s a good thing I didn’t open the door, because I probably would’ve gotten hostile at her for coming onto my property with no mask, spreading baked potato bullshit, agitating my dog, and successfully waking up my kid. She was, by all definitions, a fucking Karen, and I would’ve called her that to her face and told her to get off my fucking property.
And just because I don’t want to waste making another post about politics, there’s a house across the street from mine that has a big, backlit MAGA flag in their entry skylight window. Humorously, the homes on both sides of them, have put up Biden signs in their yards, which I have to imagine agitates the shit out of them, but I was out walking my kid in the stroller, when the homeowner of MAGA flag house, drove past me. And like a good neighbor, she waved at me, the Chinaman next door, and I waved back, because I didn’t realize it was MAGA flag house lady. But then I saw this shit on her rear passenger window, and I was like wtf
Seriously, a fucking window decal of the baked potato’s profile? I simply have no words and I’m already sick to my own stomach for talking about politics this much and I want to end this post already.
The bottom line is that this is undoubtedly the worst era of politics ever, and I don’t think it can really be disputed. The existence of the modern internet has guaranteed that such could be the case, and I think it goes without saying that 2024 and 2028 will also be the worst eras of politics ever too.
