The Moneyball of online dating

Long story short: math whiz conducts data research on OkCupid’s question survey profiles, and uses the data to more thoroughly compile potential compatible women for him.  After gathering enough information on what he’s typically looking for, he massages his own profile(s) to become a mathematically high-percentage compatibility match for the types of women he’s targeting.  In the end, he manages to go on a bunch of dates and ultimately meets a girl he’s now going to marry.

So I wonder when this is going to be made into a book by Michael Lewis or Ben Mezrich?  And then how long it’s going to take to be made into a movie directed by Steven Soderbergh?  I bet the movie will have the main character played by Jesse Eisenberg or Andrew Garfield, but definitely not someone that actually looks like the real person.

Photos: Anime Weekend Atlanta 2013

Since I’ve been on my picture-taking kick, I decided to hit up AWA for just the Saturday. This is first anime convention I’ve paid to get into in quite some time, and I’ve typically had my reluctance with them, since they usually just make me feel really old. But I really wanted the opportunity to work things out and take pictures with my camera, so I figured why the hell not?

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the costumers I saw in general. Fewer memes and more actual characters, with decent effort put into them. Lots of League of Legends costumers too. And not nearly as many spastic retards running around either. Much to my surprise, I ended up taking over 100 pictures in the one day I was there; I’ve gotten in the habit of doubling up on most people, more if I really like them, so that tends to skew the numbers. I’ve also realized that I actually really dislike taking group shots, and prefer to take pictures of solos or pairs.

The problem with “The Problem With…” Posts

The short answer is that they’re almost always hypocritical in nature.  Often times the impetus of a Problem with ___ is the fact that the person writing it is in disagreement with something that is fairly commonplace in the time in which it was written.  They just don’t like something.  They’re compromised and biased against it.  Hell, I’m 100% confident that I’ll write something in this post that directly contradicts something else I’ve ever said if there was any of my seven readers who would be so dedicated to try and find said contradiction later on.

Anyway, a number of my Facebook friends have been sharing this particular link, where a blogger is pointing out that there is a problem with cosplay celebrity.  Here’s the very first sentence of the entire post:

My husband and I are both 501st.

Dragon*Con 2013 Parting Thoughts

Overall, I can say that Dragon*Con was a pretty good time, and about what I expect out of the D*C experience on a yearly basis.  I got to see and hang out with a bunch of people, I took a lot of pictures, and I shared good food and drink with decent folks.  Sometimes I think it’s a little absurd that I dump a ton of money into doing such things, but eh, it’s once a year, why the heck not?

A couple of notable things happened during my weekend – like spending most of Friday night at the hospital because one of my friends called me and explained his dire need to go to urgent care out of the blue (nothing severe, but still necessary).  Then there was the ironically good sense of mind I had on one night to decide to sleep on the floor that prevented me from getting puked on that makes me realize how lucky I was on one evening.  And then there’s the always fun instances of watching a fellow nerd decide to handcuff himself in proposed matrimony that always is a joyous occasion at D*C.  Hospitals, puking and engagements, oh my.

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Sunday

Oh, Sunday night of Dragon*Con, the last night of the convention we so look forward to for an entire year.  Often times it’s the night we let the most loose, and for some of us (me) it’s the night we tend to get the drunkest.  Fortunately for me, there was no Four Loko in the house this year, so there was absolutely no way I was going to get a retarded drunk as I had gotten in previous years.  However, I did have a snazzy mason jar full of peach moonshine that I was sharing shots with, with several friends and acquaintances, and it appeared to go over pretty well with everyone.  I will definitely have to make a stop for more of this the next time I am passing through South Carolina.

A funny thing happened on Sunday of this year’s Dragon*Con.  In all of the years that I’d been attending, I couldn’t remember a single time when it actually rained substantially during the convention itself.  Maybe a morning drizzle or some light sprinkling, but never before had I seen a year where there was some spontaneous torrential downpour, and people fleeing into hotels and anywhere they could get refuge from the rain.

But anyway, this is a picture post, so I’ll keep the words to a minimum.  I’ll see about putting down my thoughts of the convention as a whole at another time perhaps, or unless I do it before posting this one on a timer, but forgetting to go back and delete this paragraph, lol.  Whatever happens, happens!

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Saturday (LoL candids)

But of course I had a secondary camera I had on me while taking part of the League of Legends shooting!

The good news is that instead of my busted old Sony Cybershot I had for a secondary camera, I had something that was able to at least take shots in focus.  However, it’s still a plain point-and-shoot, so the flash tends to eat things alive, but at least the subjects were in focus.

Much like last year, since there’s a lot of waiting and standing around, while rangling LoL costumers and taking turns with who’s shooting with the marvelous Joseph Chi Lin, I figure there’s plenty of time to take random candid shots of my friends as well as other LoL costumers.  And sweet merciful jesus were there a lot of LoL costumers hanging around this year.

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Saturday

Saturday was without question the busiest and most packed I’ve ever seen Dragon*Con in all my years of attending it.  It got to points where nobody could really ever move anywhere, due to all the of the narrowing choke points and walkways with thousands of people trying to traverse at the same time, compounded by anyone in a wheelchair, needing a cane, or strollers or completely obtrusive costume props.

Like really, I typically love to just be out on the floors mingling, and wandering around looking for people.  But on more than one occasion the massive number of people, and the constantly escalating heat and humidity of the facility as a whole resulted in me feeling like the only place to go, was back to the room, where I could watch some college football while slamming a cold one, all in the name of simply cooling down.
