Photos: Experimenting at the Ballpark

Lately, I’ve felt like taking pictures.  With the baseball regular season coming to a close, I figured that there couldn’t be any better time to play around and experiment with my camera than by taking it to the ballpark.

Honestly, I hardly cared about the game at all, since I was more or less there to sate some reminiscing urge to see the ballpark off one more time prior to the start of the post-season, which I’ll in all likely avoid attending (due to egregious gauging), to get a bobblehead from an acquaintance, and, to take pictures.

I don’t have enough pictures of myself

Sometimes, I stare at myself in the mirror.  There’s a small percentage of that time when I’m carefully inspecting my face, because I’m paranoid that there’s a blemish that I’m unaware of, or trying to see if there’s like an unruly nose hair or something that’s been agitating the shit out of me for the last random denomination of time that needs to be plucked.  But the vast majority of the time, I’m looking, with a combination of disdain, acceptance and sadness, and the ever-growing number of white hairs that are sprouting all over my head.

Especially at the very front of the sides, like right above my temples.  They’re particularly going white right around there, and I’m beginning to feel like I’m turning into an Asian Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four except I’m not a super genius, nor can my entire anatomy including my clothing stretch like impervious rubber.

But it’s times like this when I kind of wish I could look back to as early as just like two years ago when I didn’t have so much white hair to see what I looked like.  Sure, my weight has fluctuated over the last 5-6 years due to not having a gym to go to on account of inconsistent finances, but at least my hair was almost entire still black, and not full of wispy defiant white hairs as it is now.

The thing is, it’s difficult to do that, because as it turns out, I don’t really have a whole lot of pictures of myself, and in a way that kind of makes me a little bit sad.  Often times I’m the guy taking the pictures, and that’s somewhat of a reputation I’ve developed, so whenever I’m around in occasions where a camera might be nice to have, it’s often me the guy with it, and nobody else.  Sure I could always have people take the occasional picture for me, but frankly it always seems a little awkward to me, and I find that social occasion photos feel the most genuine when they kind of happen organically, instead of carefully planned.

I don’t even have a decent picture of myself to use in conjunction with this post.

Attempting to harness the power of CHDK

Despite the fact that I’m not particularly good at photography, I have two cameras.  Ignoring the obvious Asian joke, one is a DSLR, and the other is a point-and-shoot (Canon A3400) that I got to have as a backup camera, or for events and occasions where I still want to take pictures but a DSLR is not logically feasible.

Over the last two years, I guess I’ve grown accustomed to the quality that my DSLR is capable of shooting, so I’ve grown ever critical and dissatisfied with anything shot with my 3400 in comparison.  I like the idea of having a secondary camera that I can take pictures with, because despite the fact that I’m generally pleased with the quality of photos my iPhone takes, I’m always impulsively paranoid that taking too many pictures will tax and bog down my iPhone and suck the battery dry in a critical time.

Dragon*Con 2013 Parting Thoughts

Overall, I can say that Dragon*Con was a pretty good time, and about what I expect out of the D*C experience on a yearly basis.  I got to see and hang out with a bunch of people, I took a lot of pictures, and I shared good food and drink with decent folks.  Sometimes I think it’s a little absurd that I dump a ton of money into doing such things, but eh, it’s once a year, why the heck not?

A couple of notable things happened during my weekend – like spending most of Friday night at the hospital because one of my friends called me and explained his dire need to go to urgent care out of the blue (nothing severe, but still necessary).  Then there was the ironically good sense of mind I had on one night to decide to sleep on the floor that prevented me from getting puked on that makes me realize how lucky I was on one evening.  And then there’s the always fun instances of watching a fellow nerd decide to handcuff himself in proposed matrimony that always is a joyous occasion at D*C.  Hospitals, puking and engagements, oh my.

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Saturday (LoL candids)

But of course I had a secondary camera I had on me while taking part of the League of Legends shooting!

The good news is that instead of my busted old Sony Cybershot I had for a secondary camera, I had something that was able to at least take shots in focus.  However, it’s still a plain point-and-shoot, so the flash tends to eat things alive, but at least the subjects were in focus.

Much like last year, since there’s a lot of waiting and standing around, while rangling LoL costumers and taking turns with who’s shooting with the marvelous Joseph Chi Lin, I figure there’s plenty of time to take random candid shots of my friends as well as other LoL costumers.  And sweet merciful jesus were there a lot of LoL costumers hanging around this year.

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Saturday

Saturday was without question the busiest and most packed I’ve ever seen Dragon*Con in all my years of attending it.  It got to points where nobody could really ever move anywhere, due to all the of the narrowing choke points and walkways with thousands of people trying to traverse at the same time, compounded by anyone in a wheelchair, needing a cane, or strollers or completely obtrusive costume props.

Like really, I typically love to just be out on the floors mingling, and wandering around looking for people.  But on more than one occasion the massive number of people, and the constantly escalating heat and humidity of the facility as a whole resulted in me feeling like the only place to go, was back to the room, where I could watch some college football while slamming a cold one, all in the name of simply cooling down.

Dragon*Con 2013 Pictures: Friday

Moving onto Friday, the first official day of the convention; this is probably the largest of all my galleries, because I was pretty much doing nothing at all other than walking around and taking pictures.  Pssh, convention programming?  Please, I like dropping $1,200 on hotels, admission and parking just to do absolutely nothing but walk around and take pictures in a city I live in.

But really, sometimes I wonder if I’m a little bit crazy for doing it like that.  Seeing folks I don’t see on a regular basis, and the fact that D*C brings out the best in interesting costumes is about good enough for me.  I enjoy taking pictures, and then drinking with friends at night (or taking them to hospitals).
