Rebecca Chambers, M.D.

Piggybacking on my last post about how underrated and overlooked Resident Evil Zero was, it made me think about game, namely co-main character, Rebecca Chambers and her character background.

When Rebecca is introduced in the original Resident Evil during Chris Redfield’s scenario, we meet the timid and deferential field medic for the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team, who quickly latches onto Chris, and aides him in his quest by being able to mix chemicals as well as (with enough practice) play The Moonlight Sonata on the piano, to solve puzzles.

Little do we realize in RE1 that Rebecca has already been through hell and back at the time she’s introduced, because she had already encountered zombified humans, leeches, apes and other monsters in another mansion/laboratory, with the aid of a marine falsely accused for genocide whom she helped escape execution during the events of RE0.

But forget the fact that by the time you meet her, she’s already an accomplished zombie and monster slayer as well as a survivor; when you meet Rebecca Chambers for the first time, she is 18 years old.

One thing I really dislike about Facebook

You’re reading something that a friend has written in conjunction with a link that they’ve shared, that has appeared on your wall.  The topic of said link is something that could be perceived that of sensitive nature.  A few comments in response are visible, and you see that there is someone who is clearly passionate about the topic of the story within the link, as their comments are verbose, and in spite of the difficulty of conveying tone through text, manage to carry somewhat of an edge, bordering in almost anger, in their written tone.  This is quickly confirmed when you read on, and see that they are questioned, to which their ensuing responses are defensive and hostile.

Unappealing.

As the kids would say it, “they mad.”

Having neat summers

I’ve been in kind of a funk lately.  Not quite emo-y depression, but not necessarily cheerful and content with everything. I’m not excited about anything at all, and I’m finding it difficult to get motivated to do anything outside of my core daily activities.  This does not bode well, considering the numerous things that I wish to accomplish before the end of August, for when Dragon*Con rolls around again.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like my summers have become somewhat formulaic, which might be a logical root of some of this discontent.  Over the last few years, my summers have been dictated by baseball trips and Dragon*Con.  Now I’m not saying I don’t dislike either of those things any less this year, but I think there’s a part of me that thinks that perhaps I should seek out a break from the ordinary soon.

Virginia is the worst place in the country to drive

Whatever a traffic sign estimates in Virginia, assume it to be double, for accuracy.

Typically, whenever I visit my old stomping grounds, I fly into whichever Northern Virginia airport has the most availability (usually DCA), and then I’m at the mercy of whomever is willing to give me rides or let me borrow cars, in order to do my business or get from point A to B on my own volition.

Over the span of the last year or so, be it for a myriad of circumstances, I’ve grown really weary over the notion of traveling in and out of the greater Washington D.C. area airports.  Old convention doesn’t seem to apply like it used to.  I honestly can’t remember the last time I had a trip where I didn’t get tragically locked in place in some leg of my trip.  Demand to or from D.C. is unpredictable and completely without logic, and I’ve had flights that looked open fill up at the drop of a hat due to weather, or some giant student group being unaccounted for until it was time to board the plane.

Needless to say, I took an opportunity to try something new during my last visit up to Virginia, because in theory it seemed like a very good idea: fly into Richmond, pick up rental car, drive to NOVA, Charlottesville, NOVA, Richmond, and leave from Richmond.  Richmond has direct flights to and from Atlanta, is a smaller airport with a smaller demand to and from Atlanta, and with a rental car, I wouldn’t have to inconvenience anyone for rides, or take time away from them.

Are toys fun when they’re OP?

O·Padj. (pron. oh-pee).  Acronym for “overpowered.”  Established as video game slang; used to describe when a particular character, weapon or item is opinionated to be excessively effective, to the detriment of the claimer’s opinion, but has capabilities of being applied in uses outside of exclusively video games.

In the case of action figures, protagonists that are three times the size of their antagonists, could be classified as being OP.

I saw this commercial for these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures, and the first thought that came into mind was “are you fucking kidding me?”  Gigantic TMNT action figures to do battle with Foot Clan villains that are a third of their size?  Is that even remotely possibly fun for kids?

I’m convinced

Back in the day, there was Xanga.  Xanga was a blogging platform that coincided with the time of like LiveJournals and any other blogging sites.  Anyway, there was a popular perception that Xanga was the blog choice for all Asian people, given the fact that 4 out of every 5 Xanga sites seemed to be run by an Asian blogger.

Perception becomes reality to the eye of the beholder.

I’m convinced that when it comes to costume photography, DeviantArt is pretty much anyone not in the United States.  4 out of every 5 times whenever I see a picture that I think is really striking, and I wish to see more of it, and the rabbit hole eventually leads to me to a DA account, I’ll notice that the user’s profile states that they either live somewhere in South America or Europe.  So much for those opportunities to cyber-stalk fantasize about meeting these people in person to crush on and hope to fancy with my wit and charm.

Red Mage lyfe

The red mage reference in question here is that of Final Fantasy lore.  The class of character that was the definition of a jack of all trades; they could fight with weapons and equip actual armor yet they were capable of casting white and black magic.  Not to mention that in most every instance of the appearance of the red mage, they had an awesome red hat, often times with a feather in it.

Sounds appealing, being able to do a little bit of everything, doesn’t it?

The drawback to the red mage was however, is the fact that they were a jack of all trades – meaning that they were neither a king nor a queen of any of them.  Their fighting prowess had a ceiling far lower than that of any other class that specialized in fighting strength and abilities, and their speed and agility were vastly middle of the pack, and could go no higher.  When it came to casting spells, sure, they were capable of casting both white and black magic, but they eventually hit a wall with both, that they are incapable of surpassing, while white and black mages can continue on to learn a litany of spells exclusive to just them.
