Dragon-Con 2011 Photos: That is if you didn’t know where to look already

Shit, all these photos were uploaded on the 5th, and subsequently updated on the actual photos page.  But I thought it would be fun to torture those of my friends and anonymous readers who think I’m Mr. Spot-On-The-Money Reliable at getting photos up right away, who wait for me to put up an actual update notification on the brog FP that photos are up, and make them read some of my stories and experiences before unleashing the rest of the photographs.  But anyway, here are the rest of all the photos I took during Dragon-Con.

Overall, Dragon-Con was fun.  It was nice to stay at one of the host hotels, even if it wasn’t the Marriott, thus requiring some creativity in maneuvering about at times.  If anything at all, such luxury meant I didn’t have to worry about getting a DUI when I drove home after a night of drinking at 4 a.m.

Dragon-Con Stories: Asian guys with fancy cameras

A few months ago, I was on the prowl for a new camera.  At first, the biggest holdup with acquiring a camera was the debate I was having with myself, if this was going to be the time that I stop bullshitting around, and finally get myself a nice, DSLR, and aspire to actually take some nice photographs.  Granted, the drawback to that option is obviously the price of a good camera.  Or, alternatively, with the improvements beyond my old Sony Cybershot’s capabilities, simply get yet another point-and-shoot camera, which would be cheaper, portable, and more conducive to my typical array of photographic bullshit activities.

Right before I went to Miami, I got my new camera, and it was a Canon PowerShot, or a point-and-shoot.  This decision had nothing to do with cost, as I could very well afford a DSLR if I wanted to go in that direction, but I chose to go with point-and-shoot, based on a conversation I had about Asian guys with cameras.  Considering a big chunk of photographs I take comes at places like Dragon-Con, or nerdy and/or public events, I thought about all the times I see awkward and/or creepo and/or fake-nice-to-girls-only Asian guys running around with fancy-schmancy cameras.  And it occurred to me, that quite frankly, I just don’t want to be like any of that.

Photos: Dexter’s Condominium

Behold – the real life condominium where Dexter Morgan lived in, in the greatest show in the world, Dexter.  I found out where it was located through a fan website, and decided that I had to see it with my own two eyes.

To no surprise, it’s a gated community, with seemingly no real car entrance in front of it.  Dexter’s condo, which is towards the right tip of the shown photograph, is actually the back part of this property, and there’s no way to just pass by in a car, since it faces the Biscayne Bay Harbor (Butcher).  But I am a determined individual, and as easy as it would have been to hop the low fence they have to keep trespassers out, I simply relegated to sticking my body through some shrubs and palm trees, and taking some paparazzi-style pictures from within the foliage.

Photos: Miami trip, Day 1

This is a real-life alligator, in its natural habitat, in the Florida Everglades.  When I took this picture, it was literally three feet away from me, and if you can’t tell, it is staring right at me, since I was sitting at the edge of the airboat that I was riding, on tour of the Everglades.  In the wild, alligators are not afraid of humans, and act accordingly to intruders on silly airboats, daring anything to come into the water and not immediately be brought down on the food chain.

It was quite fascinating overall, and a fun experience seeing gators in the wild, but that was only one of the things that I did in my first day in Miami.  Naturally as is the norm with all my summer travels, there was baseball involved, and then an evening spent at an improv comedy show, topped off my Colombian hot dogs.

Photos: Cosplay For A Cause Calendar release party

Cosplay For A Cause is a 2012 calendar created by costumers, featuring costumers, from around the globe, with all proceeds going towards Japan Red Cross relief.  Thirteen months of unique, never-been-seen photography to commemorate every month (plus a courtesy January) of womens in costumes from popular anime and video games.

I may not have the best of things to say in regards to the concept of Japan relief and awareness to some degree, but I am a staunch supporter of my friends.  I know this endeavor is done with good intentions and no bullshit, so I have no qualms with supporting friends.  The calendar release party was a jovial occasion with many attractive gals aplenty, drinking, and geeky conversations, and as far as I could tell, moderately successful.  Keep it rolling by purchasing your own calendars at the aforementioned link.

Photos: Rome Braves minor league day trip

Admittedly, I haven’t been writing as much lately these days, and to be honest it’s not that I don’t have anything to write about, or that any particular things suck or anything right now, I guess it’s just that I simply haven’t felt like writing much these days.  It’s been a funny summer that way, since I haven’t been going to many baseball games, save for special occasions and designated baseball trips, and I haven’t really been doing much writing or playing video games either.  It’s like time just flies, without much substance behind any of it.

Anyway, I went up to the sticks of Rome, Georgia, 55 miles north of Atlanta to catch the minor league Rome Braves.  It was a hot, miserable, no-breeze evening, with like 800% humidity, but there was a free bobblehead involved, so I still went, because I’m a sucker for free chintzy shit like that.
