And of course, Happy New Years

It’s now 2014.  For the next 183 days, we are winding up the year, with hopes and aspirations of the best outcomes for ourselves and those we care about.  I don’t feel that 2013 was terrible by any stretch of the imagination, but we as human beings all love to feel optimistic that the following year should always strive to be better.  I have no problem with that.

For me, the year started off pleasantly, in the company of fine people, and admittedly pretty tanked.  There are text messages sent that I don’t remember, and this photo that I was too hammered to bother tagging people on that someone less inebriated than I took the liberty to do instead.  I used to feel that New Years Eves were supposed to be awesome and grandiose, but when the day is over, a chill evening with decent people is all I really want to bring in the next year.

In regards to New Year resolutions

I made a New Year resolution in 2013.  I failed to fulfill it.  The bar was set pretty low, too.

Going into 2014, I will not absolve or swear off making any resolutions, quite contrary, I think I’m going to repeat my 2013 resolution and try again; but with the bar set even lower.  The lowest it can possibly go.

If I fail to fulfill my resolution in 2014, then I am clearly not working, and changes will have to be made.

The obligatory reflecting on the year post

Favorite musical discovery: Postmodern Jukebox

I know that we as people like to encapsulate chunks of time into nice round denominations, like years, but I have to say that with each passing year, I feel like time just seems to fly by, and it’s harder to encapsulate everything as easily as it once may have seemed. However, that doesn’t mean that I’m not really going to try.

Perhaps the difficulty is in the fact that at least in my case, 2013 was a pretty ordinary year. By no means does that automatically imply that 2013 was a bad year by any stretch of the imagination, it just wasn’t one that particularly stands out in my opinion. Otherwise, I think I’d be in the situation of where I couldn’t wait to reflect on the year as a whole, so it would be a convenient excuse for me to get to relive and revisit thing(s) that were exceptionally good.

It’s a good and a bad thing that I’m such a dedicated and consistent brogger when it comes to being able to look back in time. It’s particularly good when I’m capable of finding anything that was particularly good that happened in a year’s time, because I’m a fairly open person, and I’m definitely sure to write about anything that’s made me happy or put me in a good mood. Contrarily, it works both ways, because I’m just as apt to write about the things that upset me or make me unhappy, to varying degrees of clarity and vagueness.

Photos: New Years Partying at Battle & Brew

When I was younger, there was always a part of me that felt some anxiety at the notion that New Years Eve parties had to be awesome, that they were supposed to be these big, grandiose shindigs, confetti, streamers, and all that made-for-television nonsense.  Eventually I realized that the best times I had on New Years Eves were always the ones that where the company was modest, but close and quality, and we frankly just enjoyed the time counting down the hours and minutes before midnight.

In spite of the slight hangover, being the studious and dedicated brogger that I am, I’m still prompt when it comes to actually posting pictures I take.

This  year, my friends and I spent our New Years Eve at Battle & Brew, our favorite nerd gaming bar.  We played games, enjoyed conversation, and some of us, like me, drank quite generously.  And I brought out the good camera to attempt to document some of the good times.  Sadly for myself, I felt like I was dressed pretty snazzy on this particular night, but as is often the case being the guy with the camera, there’s no documentation of such.  Que, sera, sera.

Encapsulating 2012 in a single post

Seeing as how I have absolutely no work to do at work, and haven’t had any work to do at work for the last four business days, I guess now is as good as time as any to do my own rendition of a year in review kind of post. The good thing about being such a dedicated and studious brogger as myself is that it’s easy for me to take a glance back through the year, and see what I wrote to refresh myself of the happenings of the entire year, and not just limit my entire judgment of a substantial period of time based on the events of just the last six to eight weeks.

When I look over the general pace and tone of my posts throughout the year, and just my basic perception of the year as a whole, I have to say that overall, 2012 wasn’t really that bad to me at all. Dare I say, it slightly erred on the positive side of the spectrum. I did a good bit of activities throughout the year, went to many places, had some decent experiences, and consumed a lot of unhealthy crap on the way. I like to think of myself as a pretty easy-going person, and I don’t particularly ask for a gargantuan amount of stuff each year, so I suppose I can believe that my year was filled out pretty nicely without that much negative crap mixed in.

I guess I’ll do this in a highlight reel kind of style, of the things that stood out the most to me throughout the year:

I don’t know why I’m at work, so I’ll muse about 2011

I’m pretty sure I can count on one hand just how many people are in this office today.  Granted, I’m not complaining at the fact that I’m getting paid to sit here and do absolutely no work, but man, I certainly wouldn’t have minded sleeping in this morning.  But instead, I trudged out of bed at 6:30 a.m. to go run around the ‘hood in 36 degree weather, and here I sit, waiting for a few hours to pass, since I made it all the way out here already.  So with that in mind, and since I’ve pretty much seen the entire work-safe internet now, I suppose it’s not a bad time to sit back and catch up on some writing.  And with the end of the year literally right around the corner, why not use that as a topic?

Since I’m at the office, and don’t ever visit my own sites on the network for paranoid fear that they’ll one day find my online identity, I’m musing most of this based on what I can remember off the top of my head.  But the good news is that, as a whole, I don’t think that the encapsulated 2011 year was a very bad year at all.  Compared to 2010, it was a much improved year.  At first blush I want to say that it wasn’t anything magnificently spectacular, but the more I think about it, I guess I can say that 2011 was a pretty decent year overall.

Photos: Happy, Sweet, Merciful, New Year

Despite a tiny hangover to bring in 2011, I’m ecstatic to see the passing of year 2010, and have a little blind faith, hoping that this year will be better than the last.

So far, it’s started off pretty satisfactory, with a fun New Year’s Eve party at Stu and Allison’s, where I underwent the Four Loko experiment (conclusion: they taste like shit, but hammer you fast), and we all played arguably the greatest party game in the entire planet, Telestrations.  I tracked down a new wheel for my car, and it’s on the way already, and I’ve just found a potential good deal for new tires and installation.  My current work assignment is one that I’m familiar with and it does pay very well.  So despite my week of rage and anxiety to end out the previous year, here’s to hoping that this one is much better.
