To be perfectly honest, I went into the Disney rendition of Alice in Wonderland with really low expectations. I walked out of the theater feeling that my expectations were exceeded, and most importantly, I felt more positive about this movie than I did walking out of Shutter Island.
I thought that Johnny Depp would usurp too much focus from the actual storyline, and essentially weaken it, and not to say that such did not occur, but not to the intensity of where I felt that the flick should’ve been called Johnny Depp in Wonderland instead.
No, instead I found it to be well-acted, and visually stimulating, and yet, not so gloomy of an atmosphere as Tim Burton films tend to get, but then again, the place is called Wonderland. And in the end, I left the theater feeling alright, not at all feeling disappointed and/or ripped off.
Thoughts while watching the flick:
I guess I don’t know/understand what beauty is. I know what I like, but I obviously don’t really understand/comprehend what would be considered universal beauty. Mia Wasikowska, the girl who portrayed Alice, was often complimented on her beauty, and I’m thinking about what I think are her flaws, and that she’s not really that great in my opinion. But then I think about all the times I’ve watched over Jen’s shoulders at all her chick shows about models or artists, and I think so many of them aren’t really that great either.
Furthermore, when it comes to fashion, I obviously have no clue to what is considered fashionable. Again, based on what I’ve seen the so-called models wearing from time to time in Jen’s shows, I get the impression that many girls with a similar mindset probably like the dresses that the Alice character wore throughout the flick. The concept of high-fashion to me, is more like an excuse to throw a lot of shit together in an unorthodox bastardization of colors, frills, and broken symmetry, usually paired up with really frizzy hair and over-the-top makeup. But that being said, I feel confident in making the assumption that the red dress shown above, will be the most talked about piece of attire in the movie, and there will be no less than three-to-four attempts by different women to recreate and wear this dress at this year’s Dragon-con. The sad thing is, I can hear the voices of girls all across the globe when Alice first shows up in it, about how cool they think it looks, and that they want to costume as it. I don’t know why, but it’s true. Ironically though, is the fact that I too kind of dug the red dress; its not that I found the girl attractive, it’s just something that looked cool, and it’s Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, wearing red, white, and black, instead of the iconic baby blue.
It probably won’t come close to the magnitude of Captain Jack Sparrow, but I fully foresee tons of dudes putting on kilts, red wigs, and top hats with the iconic 10/6 card stuck in it, and dressing up as the new rendition of the Mad Hatter. And since it involves kilts, this opens the doors up to put on this get-up at your local Renaissance Festivals too. Georgia’s Renfest is no exception, and it will probably encroach easily into the confines of Dragon-con too. Tons of guys, I’m saying. And guys that weigh a ton, mostly and probably.
