Skip to 3:10 for flying dolphins and floating bodies of water. I couldn’t make this shit up even if I worked for the SyFy Channel.
So after watching some speed runs of the original Ecco the Dolphin, I couldn’t help but notice the suggested videos eventually suggested watching some videos from the sequel to Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco the Dolphin: The Tides of Time. My first thought was: there was a fucking sequel?
I guess there’s really no surprise considering how many crappy games actually get sequels, but regardless, I decided to give it a whirl, to see just what the hell else could go forth with the Ecco storyline.
Ecco 2, in a nutshell is still about aliens, and still about time travel. But the storyline couldn’t possibly have jumped any more sharks than what I saw in this speed run. Apparently, instead of constantly going back in time to solve the game’s conflicts, Ecco 2 saw more adventures of going into the future. Futures, where dolphins had apparently evolved into creatures that were capable of flight, and entire bodies of water floated high above the earth’s surface, and could sustain a bigass dolphin swimming in them.
And there’s also some strange alternate future where it appears that machines had taken over the entire world, and there’s no water around. Let that soak in for a second, and no, there is no pun intended. It’s a game that centers around a dolphin, and dolphins are creatures that survive in the water. So how would anyone imagine a world with no water to be for a time-traveling dolphin? No problem, Ecco is capable for flopping around for an egregious amount of time, and fortunately for him, his objective was mostly all downhill from where he entered the alternate future, so it was a whole bunch of dry flopping and sliding down chutes until he got to where he needed to go.
Regardless, the game is a complete shark jumper (literally, at some points), and it’s hard to believe that a game that was once marketed as the educational and rambunctious adventures of a dolphin frolicking in the ocean, ended up turning into this weird saga of aliens and time travel.
