I can’t say that I’m the biggest follower of boxing, but anyone who watches any sort of sport is cognitively aware of the existence of guys like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and that they’re going to be having their long (long) overdue boxing match very soon.
The general consensus is pretty consistent all across the board: it’s five years too late, and most people don’t care nearly as much as they would have, like five years ago, but whatever it’s finally going to go down.
If I were the type to put money on sport (anymore), I wouldn’t hesitate to bet on Mayweather. Not for a second. Ask me on the street who I think is going to win, and I’m saying Mayweather before the question is even finished.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope I’m proven wrong, and I hope that Pacquiao knocks Mayweather out in 72 seconds. That would be absolutely delightful to see. I think Mayweather is an obnoxious cocky arrogant pompous asshole that would greatly benefit from being dropped a peg or fifty, but the fact of the matter is that I think Mayweather is going to be better prepared for the fight, and is going to knock out Pacquiao, in like the fourth round.
Manny Pacquiao is basically Jesus of the Philippines, and not undeserved, by any stretch of the imagination. He’s easily one of the all-time greatest boxers, he’s often perceived as a pretty good guy, and he’s basically a country politician, being in the Filipino House of Representatives.
That’s just it though, Manny Pacquiao is simply stretched too thin on a regular basis, to possibly be ready for a worldly-anticipated boxing event. Sure, it’s not like he’s not training at all, but there are still political obligations, and whatever PR or social duties that he has, and from what I understand, Pacquiao is also involved in trying to play like semi-pro basketball in the Philippines too.
Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather has been training for this fight since the thought of “I want to fight Manny Pacquiao” has entered his pea-sized brain. He basically does nothing outside of boxing and boxing training, other than hang out with Justin Bieber, and put ludicrous amounts of money on sports betting, but that just means he’s had literally nothing to do over the span of the last five years but train for a fight against Manny Pacquiao. Lest us we forget he also spent some time in the clink, where he probably did nothing but train against inmates and prisoners all wanting to be friend to a numbskull with criminal tendencies and gobs of money that he doesn’t know what to do with.
Maybe five years ago, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao would have been insanely competitive, and a literal coin toss to whom might actually win. But in this current day and age? Mayweather is going to win; if not by some absurdly fast knockout, then the usual 12-round decision that plagues modern professional boxing.
I really hope I’m wrong, I doubt that I’ll manage to see the fight happen live, but as much as I hate to say it, this fight is pretty much a foregone conclusion that it’s Mayweather, all the way.
