Long story short: dumbass who works for MARTA sends personal information of 785 employees to incorrect recipients, such as dates of births and social security numbers.
I love how the article cites terms such as “data breach,” “mechanical malfunction” and “equipment malfunction” to describe what’s basically some idiot not being mindful of the recipient field in what was probably just email.
Furthermore, I’m more surprised that MARTA actually has 785 employees. Based on the perpetual tardiness of trains, buses, and the sheer lack of visible security, maintenance and workers throughout the entire company, I’d have guessed MARTA had more like, 85 employees in total. Then again, the other 700 are probably the sock puppet names on payroll to cash checks and leech the city of money to line their pockets, but I digress.
Really though, it’s funny that the phrase “data breach” was used, because that implies that someone out there actually wants the data of people who work for such a tragically pitiful organization such as MARTA in the first place. Like if an actual hacker(s) were to consider places to breach, they’d think, “Target and The Home Depot have already been compromised, who can we steal information from next? Coca-Cola? Southwest Airlines? Citi Bank? No? I know, let’s aim for a maligned transportation authority that’s known for its ridership consisting of the lower-class, predominantly African-American demographic, because there’s bound to be profitability there!”
Nobody wants data from MARTA employees. Nobody cares about MARTA employees, much less those who actually manage MARTA employees. That much is obvious, based on all aforementioned reasoning.
Seriously, all this information probably went to some private citizen’s hotmail account, who probably doesn’t know, care, or have the first idea of what to do to exploit such data. And if the data actually belonged to people to people who worked for a low-hanging branch like MARTA, what would they even do with it?
Must’ve been a slow news day for this to even break, but I take enjoyment out of glorifying the fuckups of MARTA, so I guess it works to my benefit.
