Dear Women: Stop Staring at my Sweaty Body

I go to the gym on a consistent basis.  It used to be five days a week, but has been reduced to twice a week, solely on weekends, due to a change in my life’s routine that has really only made it feasible for me to go to the gym on Saturdays and Sundays.  In lieu of sweating it out at the gym five days a week, I try to supplement my self-imposed need for exercise on the weekdays with some outdoor jogging, regardless of it’s 85 degrees or 105 degrees.

I exercise because I’m not really a fan of dieting, and the fact that I exercise is probably the one thing that’s preventing me from full-out blowing up into a 390 pound behemoth, trying to get myself onto TLC’s My 600-lb. Life.  That being said, I probably won’t become a cut and chiseled Adonis-like physical specimen unless I start dieting, and make some alterations in the way I work out to optimize my physical exertion into creating freakishly formed musculature.

Additionally, I like the idea that exercising makes me feel good about myself; perhaps its the endorphin rush from whenever I complete a workout, or it’s the fact that I’m a snob that generally likes the idea that the vast majority of the world is lazy and doesn’t work out, so the fact that I do makes me feel good.  Or maybe it’s the fact that despite the fact it doesn’t really show that well on me, I’m developing some degree of functional strength, and when it comes to it, I probably won’t embarrass myself if the need ever arises for functional strength in order to contribute towards some sort of function that requires it.

Spoilers: True Detective Season 2 talk

Introductory sentence to explain that I am going to talk about True Detective plot points now that the second season has recently concluded.

There’s a lot to say in regards to the finale of season 2 of True Detective.  Agree, that it was overall way weaker than season 1.  Agree, that it was disjointed, filled with weakly-written characters, unmemorable characters that make the viewer go “who the fuck is that?” And agree, way more analogy and veiled commentary over plot.

There’s no sugar-coating it, season 2 of True Detective wasn’t that great.  Not in comparison to season 1, with Matthew MacConaughey stealing the show with his broody detective-turned-vigilante, but it just wasn’t that great in general.

Auto part stores have to be drug fronts

There’s a shopping center not far from where I live that used to have a Hollywood Video.  Yeah, remember those?  Anyway, since basically the entire media rental industry has died, the property was naturally vacated.  I never gave much thought to what would eventually replace it, but I passed by it recently, and saw that it was replaced by an Advance Auto Parts.

This perplexed me, because within a five-mile radius from this particular Advance Auto Parts is literally two more Advance Auto Parts stores.  Increase the radius by another five miles, and I can identify three more Advance Auto Parts.  Literally, within a ten-mile radius lies five Advance Auto Parts stores (that I am aware of).

I have a hard time believing that the proper saturation point of automotive needs is a two mile radius per store; this isn’t Sim City, where heat maps can show the necessity for auto parts, and I have a hard time believing that people need auto parts this badly to where there are five Advance Auto Parts within a ten-mile radius.

What the hell is Ken wearing in Street Fighter V?

Impetus: Street Fighter V trailer reveals availability of iconic character, Ken.

Knee-jerk reactions:

  • Street Fighter V has now caught up to the animated series Street Fighter II: V, which was known primarily as “Street Fighter V.”
  • Video shows a severe dearth of Dragon Punches, the move that Ken excelled at over than any of the other Shotaclones, but a boatload of Hurricane Kicks, the move that Ryu supposedly got the favor of
  • What the hell is Ken wearing???

At this point, gameplay doesn’t really matter to me.  I’m so far removed from the fighting game scene, that all I am is a nostalgic bystander who reminisces about how good I used to be at Street Fighter Alpha, and anything prior.  Seriously, I’ve played my copy of SFIV like, twice.

However, that doesn’t mean that I can’t make snap judgments and make social commentary about the property that I’m still somewhat interested in, from a plot standpoint.

Social media discretion

I’m by nature a pretty cynical person.  Yeah, I know that that’s not necessarily the greatest personality trait to admit to, but it’s kind of true.  Thoughts go through my mind all the time whenever I see certain things, and it’s often times a mental scale being weighed on whether or not I should say them, or express them on social media.  I thought about it today, and if I had to place a number on the thoughts that I don’t say, I’d would probably venture something like 85-90% of thoughts that might come off as cynically skeptical do not make it through the pipes and out of my mouth or typed by my fingers.

As a sample, here’s a thought I had that I’ll share on my brog because only six people read it, but wouldn’t share on social media, because that would paint me publicly as a curmudgeon:

Nobody who’s already been to a prior Comic Con actually envies those who are going for the present one.

Combos are so fucking stupid

I was chatting with some bros on Facebook about the upcoming PC version of Killer Instinct that was announced at E3, and naturally whenever the topic of Killer Instinct arises, you have to talk about combos, and of course c-c-c-combo breakers.

I made a remark about how the reboot should allow for combo hit counter to exceed the three digit mark, as in the old Killer Instinct, the combo hit counter topped out at 99, regardless of how many hits you registered afterward.  I was quickly shown a video clip of the 2013 version of Killer Instinct that I wasn’t even aware even existed, and how not only has the combo hit counter exceeded the three digit mark, it’s surpassed the four digit mark.  The video is over 24 minutes long, and yep, the player in the video executes a combo that is 2,603 hits.

Two thousand, six hundred, and three hits.

Amateur thoughts on MayPac and the future of boxing

I’m one of likely millions who were more or less disappointed with the result of the much-anticipated Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.  To no surprise, Mayweather won via decision after 12-rounds, like he’s won the five fights prior to Pacquiao, which I pretty much predicted, if he didn’t outright knock him out in an early round.

I don’t know much about the technical aspect of boxing, but it’s still a sport that I enjoy watching, so I’m sure I’m very subject to criticism about my thoughts that I’m writing now.  But the fight was boring, because of the uber-defense tactic employed by Mayweather, and the fact that he fired basically fewer than 50 strikes, as opposed to only throwing punches in counter to the numerous blows fired by Pacquiao.

The fight was pretty much decided by the fifth round, when the constant updates of the score gradually updated Pacquiao’s inability to connect with blows in spite of throwing so many, and the monumentally higher accuracy in which Mayweather was connecting, because he only threw punches in defense basically.  It was agreed upon with the people I was watching with that if Pacquiao didn’t outright knock out Mayweather, it was just a ticking countdown until Mayweather was going to be declared the winner.  And naturally, Mayweather turtled himself to victory by basically dancing around Pacquiao for the remaining 21 minutes.
