Thoughts on MegaCon

Preview image: I think this Kayle costumer is beautiful.

No, this isn’t the post with all the pictures; I’m still working on them. I took over 200 pictures in the one day that I went to MegaCon, so it’s taking me a little bit of time to review and process them. I’ll admit that it’s times like this that I miss when the editing process was sizing down a bunch of jpegs that took substantially less time, but at the same time, even though I’m a noob amateur with a camera, the quality of pictures that I’m taking now are substantially superior. I’ll take that trade off, even if it leads to being more time consuming.

Anyway, I’ve got a little bit of time to write, so I felt like jotting down some words about the MegaCon experience, in general, before they vanish from mind, and I’ll feel dumb if I blab on about it way later.

Photos: Orlando, Florida – Champion Stadium

My first ever Spring Training baseball trip brought me down to Orlando, Florida, where I would visit who else but my Atlanta Braves first?  To be honest, Spring Training had never been really high on my priority list, but the idea of taking in some new places, hanging with some friends and most importantly, simply getting away from the routine grind of normalcy made this trip possible.

Although I did enjoy the experience of seeing the Braves’ spring facilities and have zero regrets about making the trip, I have to say that I wasn’t really too big on the place as a whole.  I kind of had a preconceived idea that I might not like it, because the Braves spring facility is located on Disney property, and where there’s Disney property, there’s bound to be massive crowds, a logjam of people, and kind of a hectic atmosphere, all of which turned out to be the case.

Spring Training heckling fun

Aside from the obvious enjoyment derived out of visiting new places and watching baseball with good company during my recent Florida excursion, there were two moments that stood out a little bit higher than everything else. Or more specifically, two baseball players, who took my light-hearted ribbing and ran with it, much to the enjoyment of myself and everyone around me.

One of the biggest appeals of Spring Training baseball is that it’s supposed to be a relaxed environment for all parties, but mostly the players, so they can ease their bodies back into playing shape, chip off some of the rust that built up over the long winter, and get used to the motions of playing baseball on a regular basis again. The results of spring games do not matter, and it’s more important that they go through the reps and fortify the physical motions to make sure that everything’s working right.

Filling up the proverbial plate

Preview image from MegaCon – these guys were my favorites

I just got back home after spending the last few days down in Florida, for a fairly loosely planned trip, basically to get out into the world and do things.  Needless to say, I do not sleep well in random two-star hotels, so I’m a little bit weary having going straight back to work after flying back.

But before I put myself back into a self-imposed mountain of personal tasks of writing things, processing and editing a ton of pictures to share with the rest of the internets, I will say that it was a very good trip, that I have no regrets about (actually, there is one trite regret, but it’ll be brought up later).

Fung Wah 2.0?

Long story short: bus headed from Queens, New York to Doraville, Georgia overturns on I-95 in Virginia on account of unsafe speed and snowy conditions.  Four people are injured, driver is charged with reckless driving.

You know, before I even clicked on the link, I knew, I KNEW that this was going to be a story involving some Asians.  With every passing fact, the hunch was confirmed pretty quickly, and in spite of the unfortunate circumstances that there were some minor injuries, it has me snickering with intuitive satisfaction.

  • Bus was headed to Doraville, Georgia; Doraville is pretty much all Asians and Hispanics
  • Bus departed from Queens, which has a massively known Chinese population
  • And of course, driver of the bus is a Chinese man named Qilong Xiao

#bobbleworldproblems

Ugh, I can’t believe I just used a hashtag as my title line, but frankly it is pretty succinct in this particular application.

Anyway, I’ve made no secret that I’m a pretty terrible baseball fan these days, and as the 2014 season approaches closer and closer, I should be getting more excited than I am, because when the day is over, I still really do like baseball.  It’s just that it’s not as all-consuming to me as it once was, and I kind of view baseball as the ultimate and greatest fallback activity there is, and when it comes to travel, no travel seems necessarily complete without having viewed some baseball in some capacity.

One thing that has remained consistent throughout the years though, is my craze for baseball bobbleheads.  I really still can’t explain it, but I really do enjoy collecting them, and the accumulation of more bobbleheads is something that I’m pretty passionate about as the seasons come and go.  More than the release of schedules of games and opponents, I’m more excited about the release of the schedules of promotions, with hopes that I’ll see bobbleheads listed among them.  Not just at home in Atlanta, I have my eyes peeled, and ears to the ground when it comes to bobbleheads all throughout Major League Baseball as well as, throughout the minor leagues.  Especially those that are Braves affiliates.

I endorse this policy

Long story short: United Airlines is cracking down on people who abuse the lax enforcement of carry-on belongings, and will eventually begin sending people back to the ticket counter to check excessive luggage for a fee.

I support this fully.  When’s Delta going to get in on this?

Seriously though, I fly more frequently than the average person does, so I’ve witnessed beyond my share of inconsiderate people who bring a U-Haul’s worth of crap onto aircrafts, and stuff the overhead bins full before the second two-thirds of passengers can even set foot onto the plane.  It makes me feel ecstatic to see that there’s an airline that’s willing to finally push back at these greedy assholes who think that it’s perfectly acceptable for them to stuff their non-regulation size roll-aboard horizontally, along with their meticulously folded coat, as well as their purse/satchel/messenger bag, so that they can have the floor in front of them completely clear and spacious for their feet for when they inevitably lean back and sleep while snoring; in the seat right in front of yours, naturally.
