Alone time

I have no idea what I’m going to do when my brog is up and running again. Am I going to retroactively timestamp posts I made on the dates in which the impetus stories took place? Am I going to just post them in order as soon as things are up and running again? I don’t really know.

Frankly, I don’t know about a lot of things, and I’ve been feeling really vulnerable and uncertain about my life now, and for quite some time throughout, well, maybe all of this year. The lack of having my brog I think has given me an exorbitant amount of time to stay within my own head and think about things that probably need to be thought about, but I don’t really want to, mostly out of trepidation and anxiety.

For a site that has literally maybe six regular visitors, it means nothing to anyone really, except for me, and it’s got me dealing with some separation anxiety for my greatest and most dedicated hobby over the last 15 years. I imagine to some, it’s a place for me to spout off about opinions and veiled commentary about things in my life, which aren’t inaccurate statements, but honestly it’s a means for me to mentally vent and not just share my thoughts with those who want to read, but to kind of chronicle my thoughts and remind me that these are things that I’ve thought in my life.

Overthinking Fiction: Cody Lambert

My friend and I were talking about old television sitcoms like Blossom and Family Matters, and at some point, we got on Step by Step, and how pretty much the only reasons to really watch the show was the progression of Al’s hotness (Christine Lakin), and how distant cousin Cody Lambert was pretty much the best character of the show.

Naturally, my mind goes off on tangents, and it doesn’t take long for me to take something that I liked, like Cody, and overthink and dissect it to a point where it pretty much kind of ruins them.

But anyway, to those not familiar with Step by Step, Cody is the nephew of Patrick Duffy’s dad character, and the older cousin to the Lambert kids.  He’s older than all of the family kids, but not quite old enough to be considered a full-fledged adult, and he was basically the character that could relay to the children, their parents’ advice, when the kids would be obtuse about it.  And since Cody was the cool older brother figure to everyone, everyone listened to him.  Along the way, Cody found the meaning of life by deliberately depriving himself of sleep, and got into a massive bar-room brawl, all while spouting Valley speak and sounding like a bro before the term bro was even coined.

The successor to jumping the shark?

Fuller Blouse House.  DJ Tanner Fuller, wrestling.  Professional wrestling.  Doing a head-scissors on a luchador.

I mean, Fuller House starts off already having jumped the shark.  The entire show jumped the shark before the first episode even started airing.

So when a show has already jumped the shark, what do you call it when it somehow manages to find another level of shark-jumping criteria, but you can’t exactly go back and unjump the shark, so that it can be jumped in a more appropriate place?

You call it DJ Tanner Wrestling.

The fallacy of Extreme Time Cheaters

It was a rare evening, in which I actually found myself at home, with pretty much nothing to do.  Usually, whenever this has been the case, I’ve spent said time and then some playing League of Legends, but I’ve kind of been on a hiatus from playing lately, and I didn’t really feel like getting drawn into the time suck LoL can occasionally be.  I was caught up on wrestling, the laundry was all done, the dog was empty, the pets all fed, and no need to brog.  So I turned on the television, with no objective ahead; naturally, I guided the schedule to see what was on TLC.

My Fat Saved My Life,” followed by “Extreme Time Cheaters.”  I set my DVR to record both shows, and then I went and did something else, because of course I didn’t actually spend my time watching television, live, and subjecting myself to actually having to watch commercials.  Plssssss

Black people double standards

In spite of everything I may or may not write out, I’m a fan of Chris Rock.  I have enjoyed most every one of Rock’s standups, and I think he’s a step above most other comics out there; dare I say almost on a Seinfeld-like plane in which he makes observations and turns it into material that most people can relate to, but just don’t think about, until presented in a routine.

I don’t view him as “a black comic,” but as “a comic,” and one that is funny, witty, intelligent and genuinely good at his craft.  Furthermore, as he’s aged, he’s flexed his creative wings and done some solid writing, as well as being pretty much the token A-list black guy for Adam Sandler (Tim Meadows being the B) films throughout the last few years.

But his choice of material at the Oscars, where he basically made several tasteless jokes towards Asian stereotypes, was pretty pathetic.  They reeked of strawman deflection, where Rock attempted to distract attendees and viewers away from the elephant in the room, which is the purported black boycott of the Oscars, and make wise cracks about Asians as a means to draw attention away from the elephant.

Thoughts on 90 Day Fiance, season 3

At long last, mythical girlfriend and I finally caught up and marathoned through the rest of season 3 of the TLC classic, 90 Day Fiance.

To no surprise, as predicted, in spite of some of the seemingly overwhelming relationships blocks that formulated between some of the couples, all of them still managed to successfully make it to the altar and say their vows in holy matrimony, in spite of the fact that most of them will probably not make it even a year with one another.  But for what it’s worth, it was still an entertaining season of futility, even if I feel like after three seasons in the books, the formula is running the greater risk of becoming stale and running its course.

Everyone succeeded, regardless of what dealbreakers were broken, because nobody wants to look like a failure on cable television, and the derpiest Mormon couple wed with no real hitch and is naturally the first to announce pregnancy on the post-season tell all episode, again.  I think if this show wants to have any success next season, they need to finally have a couple that doesn’t succeed, just to give sadistic fans like myself some sort of proof that not all endings have to be roses and happiness, because that isn’t necessarily reality.

Fuller House, first impressions

I’ve stated in the past that I didn’t really have high hopes for it, but what can I say, I’m a sucker for nostalgia, not to mention it’s a great way to passively sabotage mythical girlfriend’s Netflix queue with the garbage that I decide to watch in lieu of creating my own account locally.

But I’m three episodes into Fuller House, and here are some of my knee-jerk reactions:

  • Dear god almighty did Stephanie Tanner get some fake tits
  • DJ Tanner looks better now than she ever did back in the show’s original run
  • Kimmy Gibbler has barely aged
  • Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky have barely aged as well, and honestly I’d take Aunt Becky over any of the other girls on the show, even now
  • Amusing for the show to immediately address the Olsen twins elephant in the room within the show’s first two minutes
