Do odd jobs even exist anymore?

I actually like this commercial.  Guy sees something he really likes and wants, and does what more people should do in order to attain their desires – work for it.  He busts his ass doing all the things nobody else wants to do, and in the end, surpasses his goal and is ultimately capable of buying two Jettas.  Feel good story of a year.

But it got me thinking – given my own financial woes, and the fact that I have a tendency to get mind-numbingly bored from time to time, that I would be more than capable of doing some of the things this guy does in the commercial, in order to supplement some additional income on the side for my own needs.  If it paid somewhat reasonable to off-set the cost of transportation, I’d gladly take ass-kickings from people while in pads, or walk dogs, or other odd jobs that don’t involve me having to deal directly with “customers,” are short periods at a time, and pay in cash under the table.  I don’t think I’d want to be the guy at the corner of Ponce and Monroe dressed as Uncle Sam, schilling for tax prep businesses, be the hot dog guy, or do nude modeling, but there are other random odd jobs I’d be willing to do for some side cash.

Here’s the thing though; upon looking for odd jobs in the Metro Atlanta area, they simply don’t exist.  Not to the under-the-table criteria that I’d prefer, at least.  Going to Craigslist results in nothing but modeling, veiled modeling ads that sound like porn screening, and veiled modeling ads that are for shitty no-name rappers that eventually turn into porn screenings.  That, or stuff that really does require existing skill, references, and experience.  So I googled “odd jobs,” and found a promising site of potential odd job listings, but it literally provided nothing but a list of Craigslist ads for the same shit.  And then, there was nothing else.

Maybe it’s because I’m not in San Francisco, or any other hippie/white/liberal community that would have random sheets of paper with tear-strips advertising one-off jobs on the fly, but at least in the Atlanta area, any tear sheets involve people trying to sell services so that they can make money, or support groups of some sort.  Dog walking is now done through official agencies, or “professional” walkers, and it seems like the ability to get odd jobs is now dependent on the cliched “who you know” kind of mentality.

Much like the mom ‘n pop industries were more or less decimated by the evolution of Wal-Marts and other superstores, the odd job culture seems to have been destroyed by society, and the incorporation of small businesses turning common, small labor into work hoarding and essentially, pimping.

Thoughts on Dexter, Season 5

Going into the fifth season of Dexter, I had fairly low expectations.  The way season four had ended completely broke the television series away from the books, and in a most dynamic plot twist, which made fans of the series realize that the writers had a monumental task ahead of them with season five.  Admittedly, I didn’t think that the writers would be up to the task of topping season four.

Now that I’m a few hours removed from watching the finale of season five, I must applaud the writers and the show’s cast and crew for a very enjoyable season of Dexter.  Whether or not it surpasses the greatness of the prior season is yet to be determined by me yet, but the impression I’ve been left with upon the completion of five is one of satisfaction and enjoyment.

It started off a little on the slow side, as the television rendition of the character Dexter had some necessary deconstruction, in order to evolve further.  But once he was stripped of some of his previous seasons’ tendencies, the season really began to pick up steam.  Not just Dexter developed throughout the season, but several other characters were given opportunities to flourish and grow, become interesting, and worthy of capturing the interest of viewers.  The culmination of the finale was a little predictable, but still completely overlooked by me until afterward, but it was a satisfying conclusion.

I was pleased with the performances of Robocop, and zerocool/crash override.  I can’t say so much about Julia Stiles, as she was the only cast member I balked at upon learning of her role in the season; I just have never really cared for her.  But each were integral components of the season’s story, and in the end, I’m left with a good taste in my mouth, and looking forward to a sixth season.

If I could name a favorite part of the season though, it would have to be the screenshot above; Dexter methodically beating the shit out of an abusive father, and calmly explaining every nuance and detail of pain and suffering of his purposeful blows.  Television beatdowns are a dime a dozen, but leave it to Dexter to make it cerebral, cruel, and downright awesome.

The Saved By the Bell / Friends Connection (A weak one)

So the last few mornings, while I’ve been doing my morning workout routine, I’ve been watching a lot of Saved by the Bell.  Much to my delight, it has been on in some ridiculous three-hour marathon pretty much every weekday morning, at the same time that I’m up and doing my morning routine.  For the last two weeks, every morning has been kind of a trip down memory lane, in some respect.

However, the episodes aren’t exactly placed in any particular order; some have been right after the Miss Bliss era, and they’ve jumped as far as into the College Years afterward.  Not that it’s any big deal to me since I’ve pretty much seen every single episode, but it did make me notice something, which is the chief reason why I decided to kill my last day on this particular assignment in Lithonia (which Lithonia sucks; when a Starbucks fails, you know the region is devoid of any success) with writing about a comparison . . .

Saved by the Bell was the show Friends, before Friends was Friends.

The Simpsons are still around?

For the first time in quite a significant while, I sat down and watched an episode of The Simpsons last night, while eating dinner.  It was pretty obvious that this episode was in honor of Black History Month or equivalent, due to the nature of it.  But the biggest impression was left on me in the final two minutes, as Grandpa Simpson drops the bomb about the family history, and reveals that the Simpsons lineage has some African-American in it.

Homer is 1/32 black, thus making Bart, Lisa, and Maggie 1/64th.  And suddenly all of them are gushing over how awesome it is, and how it explains all sorts of racial stereotypes that they’ve had the propensity to demonstrate from time to time.  That explains why . . .

I know that The Simpsons is pretty non-continuous, and that such a reveal will be forgotten / has been forgotten in current episodes, but I can’t help but wonder the thought process behind the story.  It felt like a little bit of an attempt to draw reaction and hope it gets ratings.  Maybe it’s to combat The Cleveland Show?  No matter, it seemed a tad stupid.

Say what you will about the Simpsons, but they’re for better or worse, the longest running sitcom in television history.  With this little nugget of information, does this also make the Simpsons the longest-running black sitcom in history, passing series like The Cosby Show, and The Steve Harvey Show?  That’ll be some interesting trivia to dredge up in the future.

Most awesome bug ever

Not a whole lot of people know this about me, but despite the overall lack of television I watch these days aside from one or two select shows, and baseball, if there’s one thing that I always have a tendency to stop on, it’s nature shows.  And when I saw the initial previews for Life, I was excited for a high-quality nature show, and set my DVR to record all the episodes.

Now despite the fact that I’m less than pleased with the narration of Oprah Winfrey, the program as a whole is still no less amazing.  It’s just so beautifully done.  I highly recommend to anyone who just likes watch animals doing their thing.

But out of all the episodes so far, the one creature that has gotten my attention to the point where it warranted a post about, is simply awesome.  That’s pretty much all I can about, it’s a bug, and it rules – The Darwin’s Stag Beetle.
