Photos: 2012 Dragon-Con, Day Two: The B-Roll

I did however, bust out my old Sony CyberShot point-and-shoot, because frankly, costume or no costume, I still like taking pictures of shit while I’m at Dragon-Con.  Besides, the duster coat in my Mafia Graves costume had plenty of pockets for me to stash it in, in those instances where I was having my picture taken.

But because it’s an old and dated camera, the quality of these pictures is obviously not as good as the ones I take with my DSLR.  Ironic too, considering almost all of these pictures are that of friends and acquaintances, and they get the point-and-shoot, but I guess that’s what comes with the territory of getting into costume again.  Que sera, sera.

Anyway, a whole bunch of candid shots and kind of backstage nature of our League of Legends group, as well as a few other random costumes seen while in my Mafia Graves costumes.

Mafia Graves gun complete. Ready for Dragon-Con now.

A little too close for comfort, but I am officially finished with the Mafia Graves gun, before the start of Dragon-Con.  In addition to learning about the wonders of Shell Shock, I have recently learned just how great stuff like WonderFlex is, as it’s what’s used as the gold trim accents to the gun’s wooden components.

But yeah, the gun’s officially finished, and for the most part, I am satisfied with this being my fairly novice foray into making a prop, with chemicals and pretty badass materials.  There are a few details omitted due to time and lack of foresight, but I’m not going to point any of ’em out to face scrutiny.  Maybe I’ll address them another time.

So with that done, I’m ready for Dragon-Con now.  Mafia Graves costume comes out on Saturday afternoon.  La Parka’s appearance is up in the air.

Mafia Graves gun update: Into the zero hour

Dragon-Con is now a day away.  The good news is that in spite of all the delays, side-tracking, and assisting in Jen’s projects, I have every intention of getting the gun completely, 100% finished tomorrow evening.  While others will have already arrived and begin filing into the host hotels, I will have one last relaxing evening at home, where I can unveil the tape covering the wood panels, and apply the last gold accents.

As for the rest of this night, I will apply clear coats to the gun and prepare for finalization.  I need to stop going to bed at 1:00 a.m. on work nights, but it looks like tonight will not be any different.  Tomorrow, or rather today, will not be the same case hopefully.

I am very excited for this weekend.  I still have to pack, and make one good final run for room snacks and biiru.

In another minor topic, this post makes 34 on the month of August.  This is a new high for me for any individual month.  I also pat myself on the back for being a consistent brogger.  I think I’ll celebrate such achievement with a Four Loko this weekend.

Mafia Graves gun update: Almost done, almost done

Yes, the image is deliberately rotated here, because currently, the painted gun is hanging on a noose in my garage.  The paint is still a little too tacky to have it sitting out, so I’m having it hanging via the tape-covered stock from my garage roof.  I didn’t make as much progress on it as I had hoped for today, but I have made some good strides regardless, and I am optimistic that I need only one or two days left to get the gold accents and shell caps in.

Admittedly, there are a few small details that may get omitted due time and inability to locate, but for the most part, I’m very optimistic on how this is turning out.  I am almost there, and I’m looking forward to wearing the costume at Dragon-Con.

Mafia Graves gun update: Core assembly 90% done

Tonight was an evening of vast frustration and agitation, but this is where my gun stands after another night of solid work time.  The stock went on exactly how I had planned it to, and I was ecstatic that it went so smoothly.

Unfortunately, the front clip not so much.  Although the picture doesn’t show all the details, there were numerous cracks to my Shell Shock, and because I’m human and don’t have four arms like Goro, I made some aiming mistakes with the drill and bore more holes than necessary, leading to some structural weaknesses.  The steps necessary to begin rectifying the problems pushes me back a little bit in where I wanted to be after the night, but from a visual standpoint as a whole, I’m pleased with the general progress.

If all goes according to plan, I’ll have this bitch painted by weekend’s end, and be right on the path down the home stretch.  It does feel good to be creating shit with my own hands.

Mafia Graves gun update: Steadly coming together

Now I’m really seeing the gun coming together.  Amidst all the apprehension of drilling through two weeks of hard worked components, it’s really beginning to take shape now, in this photo of partial construction.  The shell housings are all inserted with all pertinent cracks bondo’d and sanded, and I’ve got the primary body parts all attached together in an intricate series of screws and epoxy.

Also progress was made on the stock and the front grip, with the wood-look treatment, using wood-panel contact paper.  The process was naturally long and arduous, and made me contemplate suicide approximately twice, from all the thin-slits I had to cut in it to wrap around the curves and grooves with minimal bubbling and wrinkling.  They will need a coat of lacquer to seal everything in place.

There is still painting and the addition of a few components to figure out and add before I can say I’m completely done, but where I stand right now, I’m very optimistic.  I’m so excited.

Mafia Graves gun update: Sanded, ready for assembly

Well, I wasn’t expecting it, but sanding this motherfucker was the worst part of this entire process so far.  But for the most part, the vast meat of the brunt work is complete, and this is what my Mafia Graves gun looks like.  It looks a lot like the last time I updated, but it’s not that gay pink colored foam, but instead hardened plastic shelled.

Now, I have the fun part of figuring out how to assemble this gun together, with a combination of epoxies, screws and hopes and dreams.

But looking at this thing now, I am optimistic.
