Revisiting Battle Royale

Over the holidays, mythical girlfriend got me a copy of the Battle Royale novel.  Like most instances, I’ve heard time and time again about how the book was better, and since I was a huge fan of the BR film that was released in 2000, I was curious to see how the book stacked up against a film that I’d seen numerous times over.

I recently finished the book, and I’m having a difficult time in determining which was the superior, or if it’s even possible to compare.  Due to my familiarity with the film, I had a general mental picture of all the players of the game, which kind of led to ease in reading story where the imagination is already filled in for most of it, leading to where I’m basically reading words.

I guess the book was a little bit better, in the idea that they simply fleshed out and gave just about every student a modicum of spotlight to display a little bit of depth and character, before they were inevitably killed off, and there were some things that the book had that were omitted from the movie, or altered for ease of filming.  Frankly, I understand why the film did what they did in some of these cases, and in comparison to the book, there are some blatant scenarios where particular characters were used or displayed, solely for the fact that they had actor obligations to grant screen time, or something along those lines.

I’m sure The Hateful Eight is going to be a solid flick…

But I can’t not hear the similarities in sound between “Hateful Eight” and “Chick-Fil-A.” And when an idea like that permeates my brain, there is absolutely nothing in the world that can stop the need to illustrate what I think.

Sure, it’s shoddy and sucks (mostly) on account of me using the brush tool in Illustrator with a mouse, instead of a tablet, but it gets my point across. My favorite part of making a spoof logo of Chick-Fil-A, is finding out where and how to integrate the eyes, beak and comb into any letter that isn’t a C.

But here we have it, an illustration of what goes through my head whenever I repeatedly hear the title The Hateful Eight.

A short and spoiler-free post about Star Wars

I thought it was great.

The mythical girlfriend said it best when we were discussing it after the film, but we both agreed that it is best described as a true labor of love, by JJ Abrams.  The film doesn’t try too hard, which was probably hard to not try and do, given the vast expansive canvas that would be the Star Wars universe, but in doing so, there’s a simplicity behind the plot and execution that is just so wonderful.

Really though, as cliche as it sounds, you can almost feel the amount of care and respect that Abrams has for the property, based solely on how smoothly and well-thought out the plot and pace of the movie went.

Photos: Dragon*Con 2015 – Saturday Costumes

The good news is that I probably took more pictures on Saturday than I did on any other day, so after the lengthy gap in between getting Friday’s and Saturday’s pictures up, (I hope) the rest will go by somewhat more expediently.

Like the last costume gallery, I was being pretty meticulous about trying to take pictures in groups of threes, or at least presenting them in a way that was neat and orderly (kind of), because I’m psychotic like that and have such a strong need for organization.

Anyway, this was an entire day of picture taking at the convention, before escaping to the Georgia Aquarium for their own Dragon*Con Night, which was an interesting escape from the typical convention setting, getting to look at the awesome collection of aquatic life in between taking pictures of people in costume, before it was back to the hotels for the usual devolving into the nights of drinking and camaraderie.

Photos: Dragon*Con 2015 – Friday Costumes

Since I’m the low man on the totem pole at my job, I had the unfortunate task of having had to work on the Friday of Dragon*Con.  That being said, I didn’t arrive to the convention until like 6 p.m., which certainly ate into the times of the day in which I simply like to wander around and take pictures of costumes that cater to my interests.

Needless to say, the total photo count isn’t really that high, but I still felt like I had a decent amount of time to wander and snap pictures.

My approach this year was that I wanted to snap shots in increments of three; mostly on account of the gallery settings I use in which I like knowing that every costume gets their own row, and there’s no odd-persons out with people having to be broken up in multiple rows.  So, it’s going to be very apparent that I’d been taking multiple photographs of everyone I chose to take pictures of.

This is legit heartbreak

The spike into my heart: After years and years of dealing with dedicated Goonies fans wandering onto their property, the home owners of the actual home used to portray the Walsh’s home in The Goonies has had enough of tourists, and is taking efforts to close access to the public.

This breaks my heart, it really does.

One thing that I have always wanted to do one of these days was to make a trip out to Astoria, Oregon, and walk along some of the landmarks from The Goonies, because it’s no secret to anyone that it’s one of my all-time favorite movies.  I wanted to see the jailhouse where the Fratellis escaped from, maybe see the pizzeria (if it’s still there) on the docks, where Chunk watched the police chase and subsequently spilled a milkshake all over himself, and of course, see the Walsh family home, where the Goonies themselves gathered and hung out.

Jurassic World > Mad Max, easily

If I dared make such a statement over social media, I would instantaneously be labeled as things such as curmudgeon, contrarian, hipster or the like, but it’s true.

I simply think Jurassic World was a vastly superior movie over Mad Max: Fury Road.

Neither movie was really mind blowing, thought-provoking or something that blew me away, but when I think about how I felt after seeing both movies, I come away from Jurassic World with more pleasing emotions than I did after seeing Fury Road.
