The power of PowerPoint

I try and not have a lot of things in my life that I can legitimately say that I hate, as unbelievable as that may sound.  But seriously, I think that it takes a modicum of emotional attachment to hate something, and there are times in which I don’t want to give any particular person, place or thing the satisfaction of having some sort of attachment at all to me, even if it is one that of hatred.

But god damn, do I ever fucking hate PowerPoint.

Seriously, nothing ruins my day faster than having to do something in PowerPoint.  Projects in PowerPoint not only make me want to quit my job, they make me feel like the world is this gigantic flawed place where nothing can possibly go right.  They make me question existence outright, and make me feel apocalyptic feelings of ending the world and that everything on the planet is putrid shit.

I don’t really want to get too opinionated on the whole current issue of police officers killing unarmed black people, but I do want to point out what I think.

As unfortunate it is that this is all going down, it is still ultimately one gigantic media trend.  I can’t believe that I’m the only one who sees this for how it is, but the truth of the matter is that in light of one high-profile cops killing civilian story, all of them have been thrust into the spotlight for everyone to see when every single occurrence happens.

See, the thing is that if one scours the internet on a daily basis thoroughly enough, I’m willing to bet money that they can find a story of a police officer forced to kill a person in the line of duty, every single day.  Granted, they may not be allegations that the deceased may or may not have been armed, or allegedly yielding when it happened, but the fact is that police probably kill people every day.  Sounds gruesome, but not that it makes it any better, people, regardless of occupation, kill people, every day.  Shit, sparsely a day goes by where looking at local Atlanta news doesn’t yield a death happening in the AM hours.

When winning is all that matters

Lest I look like I’m turning my brog into something of a sports brog, running two straight posts with Kobe Bryant, it’s all part of my loose rules of brogging that anything goes as long as the thoughts and words are my own.  But bear with me, this’ll probably be the last post about basketball for a while, since the thoughts aren’t necessarily about basketball, but more about personalities, and rare ones at that.

But anyway, supposedly within the next 1-2 games that Kobe Bryant plays in, he’s going to pass Michael Jordan for 3rdplace of all-time points scored.  It’s debatable on whether or not he’s going to be able to catch and pass Karl Malone for #2, but I think it’s a safe bet that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387 points is going to be safe for yet another challenger.

When I was younger, my then, also-basketball loving friends and I would often talk about who “the Next Jordan” was going to be.  And believe you me, it was a debate that occurred everywhere, where there was basketball to be discussed.  Michael Jordan was nearing the end of his (official, pre-Wizards) career, and it was a rhetorical question that popped up every few years when the reality sunk in that MJ wasn’t going to play forever.

Sorry, can’t take it seriously

I’ll reserve any talk about the actual matters of the supposed cops killing black people epidemic, because I kind of want to write about it eventually, as well as the fact that when the day is over, my opinion doesn’t mean shit in the grand spectrum of things.  But I saw Kobe Bryant among numerous NBA players wearing this “I CAN’T BREATHE” t-shirt, and I couldn’t sit idly at the knee-jerk reaction that I had in my head:

Comic Sans?  Really?

If there’s one thing that just about anyone who’s ever used a computer in their entire life ends up learning, it’s that the use of Comic Sans eradicates any iota of credibility to absolutely any written word on the face of the planet, from the beginning of time to the end of civilization.

Bad brogger

I’ve been a bad brogger since Thanksgiving.

Admittedly, things at work have been somewhat hectic lately, and I really have not had much time to write in my downtime; as I really haven’t had any downtime in recent days, because the holidays are upon us, and before everyone starts vanishing for indeterminate denominations of time, they want to dump as much work on my department as they can, so that they can have hopes and dreams of going into Christmas with a clear conscious.

Needless to say, I’ve actually been working while at work, way more so than usual.  I’ve even had to skip the gym once already due to the fact that the stream of work was that heavy, that I simply couldn’t afford to take my daily gym hiatus.  That, certainly didn’t make me too thrilled.

Thanksgiving musings

The following is a spatter of random thoughts that have gone through my head throughout the course of the holiday. I may or may not attempt to chronologically sort them when I’m done, as I’m pecking this out on my busted iPad.

The above picture is my wailing niece. I wanted to have some sort of visual to accompany this post.

This trip is the first time that I’ve brought my own car into the Commonwealth of Virginia in quite some time. The last time I drove my own car on my old stomping grounds was when I still had my old Nissan and I still felt it had the legs to make the trips from Atlanta to NOVA. Part of it is refreshing and fun to drive my own car on old familiar roads, but another part is apathetic and piteous of the residents of Virginia, whom have apparently been beaten into submission of driving like sissies in fear of the overzealous ticketing and fine system in place here. Safety is one thing, but the legions of people camping the left, passing lanes, going the approximate speed limit are bigger hazards to other motorists than the occasional tryhard going 88 mph, I would hypothesize.

This is our country

Embarrassing, isn’t it? Normally, I’ll feign ambivalence to the unfortunate news of the world, but given the fact that this story is literally, quite unavoidable, enough thoughts have swirled around in my head to where I felt like writing something.

I’ll keep it short (as I can), because it’s not like there’s going to be any shortage of opinions on this matter, and mine certainly isn’t going to make or break anyone’s line of thinking.

I’m not qualified to say on whether or not I feel that it’s good or bad that the officer in question has apparently gotten off the hook without any sort of punishment, because I simply have not paid any attention. However, I do think that it’s completely unfortunate that the response of such a decision from the predominantly black community of Ferguson, Missouri has been that of a massive eruption of violence, vandalism, looting and general destruction.
