Long story short: the State of Georgia caves under the pressure of all the anti-Confederate history rhetoric, will formally remove names of both Robert E. Lee’s birthday as well as Confederate Memorial Day from the calendar, starting in 2016.
In other words, no more Confederate Memorial Day. QQ
Well, the day will still be a paid day off that most people out there will not get (including me now QQ x2), but it just won’t be called “Confederate Memorial Day” anymore. It will be referred to as simply “state holiday” for those paying attention.
Same goes for Robert E. Lee’s birthday, which I’ll agree is kind of bullshit anyway, but because it basically is the same date as Moloch Day, it’s basically a convenient excuse to retroactively acknowledge it on the one day of a year that is technically a day of business but nobody wants it to be: Black Friday.
Anyway, the point of me feeling like writing about this really boils down to the fact that I have always enjoyed smugly boasting my day off for the past few Aprils, while I was an employee of the state. And in a way, I feel like I kind of dodged a metaphorical bullet by having gotten out of there before obnoxious changes like this occurred. Sure, it’ll be a paid day off I won’t get any more, but I also won’t really be able to have bragged about being on account of Confederate Memorial Day anymore, either.
Regardless, only those of us who have enjoyed it, or are aware of it thanks to my brog (all six of you), will always remember that the third Monday in April will always be Confederate Memorial Day, regardless of what a bunch of butt-hurt, overly sensitive race card wielders do and say.
